The Erosion of Novel Ideas & Perspectives As an investor, I'm surprised at how uncommon it is to encounter founders and fellow investors who hold distinct perspectives on the current market and the future of technology. In today's economic climate, heightened investment scrutiny has made fundraising more challenging for both founders and venture capitalists. This environment necessitates a higher level of creativity and original thought to distinguish oneself in today's saturated market. Here are a few strategies I employe to challenge my own beliefs to create new ones: 1. Engage proactively with contradicting perspectives Actively exploring and analyzing various perspectives, we can critically assess multiple points of view and hone our skills in recognizing subtle details and biases. 2. Embrace childlike curiosity - "Why" Children typically begin asking "why" around age two and continue until about five, a time when their experience is limited and their brains are rapidly developing. As adults, we should emulate their natural inquisitiveness to deepen our understanding of our reality. 3. Accept we're wrong most of the time History shows us that many long-held beliefs, even fundamental ones like gravity, have evolved with new discoveries. This teaches us a humbling lesson: we are often mistaken. Accepting this, we can foster an environment where questioning the norm is standard, leading to collaboration, creativity, and collective progress towards deeper understanding. 4. To mark our business law firm's 20th anniversary, I'll share weekly articles highlighting lessons learned over the past two decades. By transparently reflecting on our journey, from building client relationships to embracing change, I hope to provide a perspective applicable beyond the legal industry. I still remember the excitement when our first fax machine arrived. It felt cutting-edge at the time. Twenty years later, it seems ancient compared to how far legal technology has advanced. Essential systems like email and calendars were significant milestones in the early days, allowing us to ditch antiquated processes. Achieving a paperless office revolutionized efficiency and flexibility. Video conferencing and cloud portals later boosted productivity. However, implementation without proper change management and training proved futile. People struggled to adopt new tools without support. With Microsoft Teams, extensive training paved the way for successful adoption. Thoughtful roll-out enabled seamless collaboration despite exponential growth. Of course, nothing transformed legal work more than powerful research databases like Westlaw and Lexis. Overnight, instant access to case law made treks to the library obsolete. Most recently, artificial intelligence has taken efficiency to the next level. With tools like e-discovery and contract review platforms, we can analyze volumes of documents faster than ever. This frees us to focus on higher-level strategic thinking. Key Lessons: - Training and change management are essential for new tech adoption - Willingness to experiment balanced with strategic implementation - Focus on improving client service and culture - Commitment to constant innovation - Cutting-edge tools should enhance, not replace, human connection The pace of change has been staggering. How have you successfully managed change within your organization? ✏️ Interesting. LinkedIn is suggesting post topics based on my historical content. So, let's take a stab at one of the questions it posed! This question was really thought-provoking, because change is constant in a growing business. You evolve and adapt, or you die. I didn't want to share a one-off example that's not useful or relevant to anyone reading it. Instead, I'll share how I approach change management in general. 1. Define the purpose. Some "change agents" are really just agents of chaos. Focus on what the point of the change is and don't deviate. 2. Set a baseline. You have to measure the impact of your change, but if you don't have an agreed upon control variable for the test, you won't be able to define success or failure. 3. Use a scalpel, not a chainsaw. At @Leaf Home, this means piloting things in an office or two before we roll wholesale changes out to hundreds of others. It minimizes risk and makes measurement easier. 4. Solicit feedback. Data doesn't always tell the whole story. Talk to your people, your customers, etc. Even if things are generally positive, implore them to share what could be better. 5. Document and embed. If you find a win, write the new SOP. Better yet, build it into your systems and processes so it sticks. 6. Communicate. This means before, during and after the change. Provide clarity to why you're changing something, and context for how it impacts the business. At the end of the change, make sure you celebrate the wins (and dissect the losses).
