Summary

Communicating change to diverse teams requires thoughtful strategies that prioritize clarity, inclusivity, and understanding. These practices ensure that all team members, regardless of their background or communication style, feel informed and supported during transitions.

  • Use plain language: Avoid jargon and complex terms by simplifying your messages so that everyone can easily grasp the information being shared.
  • Provide multiple formats: Share updates through various media, such as videos, infographics, and written summaries, to accommodate different learning and communication preferences.
  • Encourage open dialogue: Create opportunities for team members to ask questions, share feedback, and engage in two-way communication to ensure understanding and address concerns.

  • The "discussion" around DEI may be creating an impression that it's all about race and gender. It's not. It's any difference: region, nationality, religion, and ability are also included, with the goal of ensuring every QUALIFIED individual has an opportunity to contribute and compete regardless of their differences. That includes the neurodiverse. Internal communication is often designed for the “average” employee—but what about those who process information differently? Neurodivergent employees, including those with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and auditory processing differences, may struggle with lengthy emails, dense text, or unclear messaging. Our typical one-size-fits-all approach to communication can leave these individuals feeling overwhelmed, disengaged, or excluded. That's problematic, given that neurodiverse employees can often focus better than "average" employees; given the opportunity, they bring unique and valuable abilities to the table. The best internal comms teams are rethinking their approach to ensure messages are clear, accessible, and inclusive for all employees. This includes: * Using plain language to make content easier to understand. * Offering multiple formats (text, video, audio, and visual aids) to accommodate different learning styles. * Breaking up dense information with bullet points, headers, and summaries to improve readability. * Leveraging AI and personalization tools to tailor content delivery based on individual preferences. * Providing alternative ways to engage, such as interactive Q&As, transcripts for videos, and visual storytelling. By embracing inclusive communication practices, organizations can foster a workplace where everyone—regardless of how they process information—feels informed, valued, and empowered. Is your organization ensuring internal communication works for everyone? How?

Bridging Direct and Indirect Communication Styles in Global Teams: A Leader's Guide 🤝 🌏 Have you ever sent what you thought was a clear message, only to realize it was interpreted completely differently by team members across the globe? You're not alone. 💭 Imagine a Dutch supervisor giving feedback on a Brazilian team member’s proposal: "This proposal needs significant work." The Brazilian colleague, however, walks away feeling disheartened. 💔 Neither intended for this disconnect—both simply wanted to produce great work. 🎯 Here are four tested strategies I've seen transform global team communications: 1️⃣ Create a "Communication Charter" 📝 Work with your team to document and share each culture's typical communication patterns. Make it explicit: "In Germany, direct feedback is a sign of respect" or "In Japan, suggestions often come wrapped in careful language." 2️⃣ Use the "What I'm Hearing" Technique 👂 When receiving indirect feedback like "Maybe we could consider..." or direct feedback like "This isn't working," practice restating: "What I understand is..." This simple practice reduces misunderstandings in global teams. 3️⃣ Establish Multiple Feedback Channels 💬 Some team members may never speak up in meetings but will share brilliant insights via email or one-on-one chats. Give your team options – it's not about changing their style but creating space for all voices. 4️⃣ Model Flexibility 🔄 As a leader, demonstrate switching between styles. With direct communicators, be clear and concise. With indirect communicators, provide context and be attentive to subtle cues. Remember: The goal isn't to make everyone communicate the same way, but to build bridges between different styles. The most innovative solutions often emerge when diverse communication styles meet in the middle. 🌉 What communication challenges have you encountered in your teams? Did you know that during times of change, even the most articulate adults start reading at a 4th-grade level? 🤯 Stress can wreak havoc on our cognitive functions, making clear communication more critical than ever. Effective change management starts with simplifying our messages. But what if we take this a step further? Here are some simple ways to shift how you can help your folks better understand the change(s) coming their way: 1️⃣ Ditch the Jargon: Forget the corporate lingo. Speak in plain, simple language that everyone can understand. It’s not about dumbing it down; it’s about making it accessible. 2️⃣ Visual Communication: Use more visuals—infographics, videos, and diagrams can convey complex ideas quickly and clearly. This doesn't just make things look prettier, folks are 6x more likely to remember information when there's a relevant picture associated with it! #neat 3️⃣ Shorten Meetings: Cut down meeting times and focus on concise, impactful communication. This isn't just a fad, attention spans are shorter under stress. Bonus points that this also helps level the playing field for your neurodivergent workforce! 4️⃣ Regular Check-Ins: Increase the frequency of one-on-one check-ins to provide continuous support and address concerns promptly. 5️⃣ Empower Through Storytelling: Share stories that resonate emotionally. Personal anecdotes can be more impactful than dry data. How are you adjusting your communication strategies to meet your team's needs during change? The Hidden Rules of Change Communication: Why Most Organizations Get It Wrong After observing dozens of transformations, I've discovered a hard truth: Great strategy with poor communication, Is the perfect formula for failure. Here are the 5 Golden Rules that separate Successful transformations from the failures: 1. Start With WHY Begin all change communication with purpose, not process. ✅ Create a compelling story that connects to both organizational mission and personal growth. 2. Maintain Message Consistency Ensure core messages remain consistent across all channels and leaders. ✅ Develop a central message platform and create communication toolkits that keep everyone aligned. 3. Create Two-Way Dialogue Make listening as important as telling. ✅ Establish multiple feedback channels and visibly respond to input received. 4. Visualize the Journey Make change visible and tangible through visual communication. ✅ Create visual roadmaps and progress dashboards that make the abstract concrete. 5. Communicate With Radical Honesty Build trust through transparent communication, even when challenging. ✅ Address concerns directly and create safe environments for difficult conversations. Communication isn't just about transferring information. It's the operating system for successful transformations. Which rule do you find most challenging to implement?
