This is one of the most important things I’ve learned about resumes, and most don’t do it. Not doing this can hurt your chances of getting an interview 👇 Your resume 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞 a description of what you are 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 for. Your resume 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 a collection of your 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭 to the job you are applying for! Here's a simple example: A Project Manager's resume that describes what they are 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 for looks like this: - Delivered the project on time and within budget. - Communicated updates regularly to all stakeholders. This is a terrible way to "stand out" - In this example, every Project Manager is responsible for delivering projects on time and budget, and for communicating with stakeholders. In other words, there's nothing 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 about this person's resume. Your resume has to show: - Evidence that you have the experience they are looking for (Tailored resume) - Evidence of the value you bring to the team (Your past accomplishments) To write a resume that 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭, here’s what you should do 👇 Write 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, not what you were responsible for : - What did you do? - What was the impact? - How did you accomplish it? Use the “𝐗 + 𝐘 + 𝐙” formula to write accomplishments: “Accomplished [𝐗] as measured by [𝐘], by doing [𝐙]” 🛑 Instead of writing: “Delivered a project on time and budget” ✅ Write this: 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 [𝐗]: “Launched ____ project” 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 [𝐘]: “1 month ahead of schedule and increasing ROI by Z%” 𝐁𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 [𝐙]: “, by creating a new communication process that allowed low and medium risk tickets to be pre-appproved, reducing friction during development” Together X + Y + Z: “Launched ___ project 1 month ahead of schedule and increasing ROI by Z%, , by creating a new communication process that allowed low and medium risk tickets to be pre-appproved, reducing friction during development” 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 help you show that you have the experience companies look for in 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 of a project that had impact to customers, your team or the organization. 𝐓𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 your 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 to the job you are applying to will increase your chances of getting an interview. Adding more colors, graphs and random keywords will not. A few extra tips as you go through your accomplishments: 1. Not every accomplishment will have a number (impact). It’s ok, try to have as many as possible. 2. Accomplishments tailored to the job you are applying to >>>> accomplishments you believe are the most important. 3. Have you asked yourself if your resume content clearly and concisely communicates your best work experience? Does it show the actions you took? Does it show the impact you drove? During resume reviews and mock interviews, one of the biggest gaps I see is individuals underselling their wins within their existing resume content and/or not including their highest-impact wins at all. You've got amazing experience—let's make sure your resume reflects it! Here are some tips and strategies to highlight your biggest wins while aligning your content with the roles you're targeting. Remember: think about where you want to go, not just where you've been. Step 1: Define Your Target Role. Be specific! "Software Engineer" is too broad. "Senior Cloud Security Engineer specializing in AWS" is better. Step 2: Categorize the Role's Responsibilities (R&Rs). Group them into key areas like Communication, Problem-Solving, Stakeholder Management, or Data Analysis. This helps you identify which skills are most valued. Step 3: Identify Key Metrics. What metrics does the team or role tie to? (Revenue, Operations, Adoption, Customer Satisfaction, etc.) Understanding these metrics helps you frame your accomplishments in terms of business impact. Step 4: Document Your Wins with Data. Write out past work experiences that align with all three of the above (target role, R&R category, and key metric), including quantifiable data. If you can't measure it, remove it! "Wins" are projects with clear, measurable impact on your team or the business. Focus on your top 5 wins. Step 5: Conduct a Resume Audit. For each R&R listed in the job description, assess your current resume content. Does it demonstrate your skills and experience in that area? Step 6: The "Clarity Test." Once you've completed the above steps, read (and re-read) your resume. Share it with a friend. Ask: "Does my resume clearly connect with this job description? Do you understand the work I did? Can you clearly see the impact I made?" - Keep in mind, the recruiter may only have a high-level understanding about the role. So you want to make it easy to understand. Step 7: Quantify and Show Impact. You have great wins; you just need to identify and connect them. Assess each bullet point. Challenge yourself: "How can I quantify this? How can I show impact here? As a hiring manager, and a manager of hiring managers, I've probably reviewed close to 1,000 resumes in my career. Here are the biggest mistakes I see people make over and over again (and what to do instead): ❌ Focusing on responsibilities rather than impact. If your title is "e-commerce editor," someone reading your resume can probably guess at what your basic duties were—so don't waste a lot of space listing them out. ✅ Emphasize the accomplishments you had in each role. What impact did you make to the team or the business? Did you increase traffic to your vertical by X%? Contribute to the highest-ever Black Friday/Cyber Monday revenue sitewide? Streamline the publishing process? Tweaking your bullet points to highlight impact will help you stand out from the crowd. ❌ Not tailoring your resume to the job you're applying for. When I was hiring a Director of SEO Content at Policygenius, it was shocking how many resumes I got from very experienced editors that did not include the words "SEO" or "search" at all. They might have had the relevant experience, but how could I know that? ✅ Take the time to make sure your bullets match up to the job description. Don't force the hiring manager or recruiter to guess at your qualifications; make it easy for them to see that you're a great fit. ❌ Overstuffing your resume. I'm not strict about the one-page rule (though if you have less than 5 years of work experience, stick to one page!). But I once saw a resume where the person used four whole pages (!) to cover the last four years of their career. Unless you're creating an academic CV, a resume is meant to be a synopsis of your career, with emphasis on the last 5-10 years—not an exhaustive accounting of everything you've ever done at work. ✅ Be ruthless about highlighting your biggest accomplishments in each role, and keep it to two pages or less. Once you've got 10-15 years of experience under your belt, your early career roles should start dropping off your resume altogether (let's face it, they probably aren't relevant anyway). Bonus note: A big contributor to overlong resumes is summary statement bloat. If your summary statement is 3/4 of a page, that's not a summary! Try for 4-5 lines—1/4 page at most—and put those big accomplishments under the relevant role instead. I could go on at much greater length about each of these—which would you like to hear more about? I don't know who needs to hear this but your accomplishments and the things that you achieved in each one of your roles should be on your resume. During my job search, I landed 15+ interviews and 2 job offers with a resume that showcased my accomplishments but also aligned with the job description. That is how you stand out. You copying the job description is not going to get you far. You having basic bullet points that list your day-to-day tasks isn't going to help your resume stand out either. For example, instead of having "worked in a high-volume call center and answered customer calls all day", you should put "Successfully managed 50-100 calls a day and efficiently troubleshooted customers issues to their satisfactory." Your resume should be you bragging about everything you did in your current role/ previous roles and those accomplishments should also align with the job you are applying for. You should be sharing why you would be an asset to the team you are applying for. It may take more time to do this, but it is worth it at the end of the day.

Yesterday, I was chatting with a senior executive who faced a not-uncommon dilemma. He had a difficult time talking about what he did and his accomplishments. When I gave him his info-gathering "homework," he said this is the very thing he hated the most--talking about himself. Isn't it funny/sad? We don't hesitate to point out strengths for colleagues and friends, but for ourselves, it can be difficult. Especially on paper. Here are a few ways to make the accomplishment gathering for your resume less difficult. ☑️ 𝙄𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙞𝙙. Listing what you did in terms of A, B, C is easier than thinking of them as "accomplishments". *When my clients struggle, I ask them to simply list what they did at their job. Then I have them dig a little deeper into each bullet to identify where they added value. ☑️ 𝘼𝙨𝙠 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛: How did I help reduce costs? Did I make the process easier? Did I generate revenue? Have I completed my projects on time and under budget? Were there any challenges? If yes, what did I do to solve them? *This adds value and showcases ROI. ☑️ 𝙉𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙨. Let your numbers do the bragging for you! Use metrics to show where you've made a difference. If you improved efficiency by 35%, it's not bragging, it's a fact. I have been writing, reading, and reviewing resumes for nine years. Here are some best practices for 2025: ✅ A resume's job is to get you an interview. It's a marketing document, not a detailed career history. You don't need deep details about all of your tasks and responsibilities for all of your roles. Just stick to the highlights that are relevant to the jobs that interest you. 👏 The keyword here is RELEVANT. If it's relevant to the jobs you're applying for, keep it. If it's not relevant, remove it. 👏 ✅ A resume can be more than one page. Two pages are fine. A recruiter would rather see two pages that have lots of white space, 11-point font, and room for the eye to breathe. This is better than trying to cram everything dense into one page with a 9-point font. ✅ Keep the format simple. Avoid graphics or charts. Keep it all in one column (not two). No fancy fonts, stick to the basics. Keep the sections simple and easy to identify. We just want to make this easy to scan. ✅ City and State, not your full address. Don't list your full address on the resume. This protects your privacy and avoids potential bias. Just list your closest city and state. If you live far from a city, you can say, "[city name] metro area." I also recommend creating an email just for your job search and putting that on your resume to protect your privacy. ✅ Lead with the result. Resume bullet points typically go "Did X to achieve Y which resulted in Z." I flip that: "Got results Z by doing X in order to achieve Y." "I got these results by doing this action in order to achieve this goal." Even better if the "results" have metrics attached: "Reduced production time by 20% in six months by implementing new scheduling software for 50 employees that improved cross-functional collaboration." Why lead with the result? This market is very competitive, and you have to stand out from a sea of applicants. Leading with results, outcomes, and achievements helps you do that. It's the difference between show vs. tell. You can TELL me you're good at something (that's boring and generic), or you can SHOW me by sharing bullet points about your results, metrics, and outcomes (that's specific and intriguing).
