Why you need a separate professional email

Explore top LinkedIn content from expert professionals.

Summary

Having a separate professional email means using a dedicated email address that clearly identifies you and looks polished for work or job applications, rather than your old personal account or one with nicknames. Creating a professional email helps you make a strong first impression and ensures your communications are taken seriously.

  • Show professionalism: Create an email address that includes your name to present yourself as credible and trustworthy to employers and clients.
  • Keep things organized: Use your professional email only for work-related messages so you don’t miss important replies in a cluttered personal inbox.
  • Avoid red flags: Steer clear of quirky or casual email names to avoid giving the wrong impression to recruiters or business contacts.

Have a Professional Email Address As I say, always ensure that you package yourself properly and professionally when you are looking for a job. The job market is very competitive and you can't afford to miss opportunities because of simple things you can easily change. Let me talk about email addresses today. Most of us opened our email addresses at secondary school or the university. If you are like me, you will remember that as a youngin', you'd always want to look "cool" and you would name everything with a nickname or the name of your favourite artist or celebrity. I receive a lot of emails and I still see that this happens. Some people still use email addresses of actors or their nicknames. You see, nothing wrong with you having an email address with your nickname but when looking for a job or making official applications, please use a proper email. Some recruiters will see your email and conclude that you are not serious even if you are. Some bad examples: - sofreshsocoolwezi@gmail.com - scofield89wezi@yahoo.com - madywemu@gmail.com - This was my first email 😂 - madalamadalawezi@gmail.com - amunawemu1725844763930@gmail.com - ronaldo9999999@gmail.com If possible, please have an email that has only your name. Whether it starts with a first name or last name that is OK. Just make sure it looks professional. For popular names, you can have a number added to it as there may not be any available variations of your name. For example: - wezimunkhondya@gmail.com - munkhondyawezi@gmail.com - brendaphiri1@gmail.com Please, just make sure you present yourself professionally. It looks simple but sometimes these small things make a big difference. You can maintain your old email for everything and just use the new professional one for applications and the like. I hope you find this helpful.

Your Email Address Might Be Holding You Back Job searching is already frustrating enough—you don’t need something as small as your email address making it harder. But it happens. If your current email is something like beerlover69@whatever or cutiepie_xoxo@whatever, it’s time for an upgrade. I know it seems ridiculous. “Why should it matter? My experience is what counts.” And you’re right. It shouldn’t matter—but it does. When a hiring manager sees an email that looks unprofessional, it can make them question how serious you are about the role. First impressions happen in seconds, and a messy email address is an easy red flag to avoid. I personally have never let an email address effect my choice of screening someone- but it unfortunately does happen. The fix? Create a separate email for job applications. Something simple: FirstName.LastName@whatever or some variation with some numbers added. Not only does it make you look more polished, but it also helps you keep track of responses instead of losing them in a sea of spam and shopping promos. You don’t need to overthink it—just clean it up and make sure you’re putting your best foot forward. Little details like this can make a bigger difference than you’d expect.

Does Your email address structure matter? I wish I had known this earlier. Over the years, I’ve come across all sorts of email addresses like beautylily@yahoo.co.uk or powerjoe@gmail.com. They seem fun, but last year, when I sat on an interview panel for the first time, I noticed something surprising. Unprofessional email addresses can subtly put off recruiters, even when the candidate is highly qualified. Ideally, your email should include your first and last name in a simple, professional format. Unfortunately, I didn’t know about this early on, and both of my official emails don’t reflect my name. At this stage in my career, changing them isn’t possible But if you’re still a student or in the early stages of your career, take this as an advice. Create a professional email address now. If you are in medical writing, this advice is very crucial because your email is at the centre of what you do. It may not seem like a big deal to you, but it might matter to a recruiter. #careerinsights
