As we get back into the office today at Office Dynamics International, I want to talk with you about the importance of setting SMART Goals. We often set New Year's Resolutions that are seldom maintained. The start of the new year often encourages us to want to set new goals. SMART Goals create a framework for us to follow to help us set goals that we can actually reach: Specific: Make clear, precise goals. For instance, attending a particular training or enrolling in a certain course is a lot more specific than saying, "I want to receive more training for my profession." Measurable: Goals should be quantifiable to track progress. If they are not, you will not be able to measure your growth. Achievable: Set realistic and attainable goals. It's good to set the bar higher, but don't make it too lofty that you discourage yourself. Relevant: Your goals need to be relevant to your personal or career aspirations. Time-bound: Goals need a deadline or timeframe so you can hold yourself to a standard and make sure that you are working towards completing them. As administrative professionals, we should always be working towards goals that better ourselves and challenge us to go above and beyond where we are currently at. Your future self will thank you for it.

A recent conversation with a mentee trying to navigate the next steps in their career reminded me of an essential rule I always emphasize: You own your career, therefore you have to be in the driver's seat. They recently received some feedback from their manager that was confusing as it didn’t align with previous feedback. The conversation on next steps was very vague. Reality check: waiting for clear guidance or validation from others can leave you stuck in neutral. Instead, you must proactively manage your own career path. Here are a few things I suggested: 1. Do a Self-Assessment You need to understand your strengths, weaknesses, passions, and career aspirations. Identify what excites you and where you see yourself in the future. Remember they can all change due to new experiences and gaining new skillsets. 2. Seek Constructive Feedback While feedback from leadership is valuable, it’s important to triangulate. Reach out to mentors, peers, and others in your function that you admire for their insights. Feedback is just one piece of the puzzle. Use it as a tool for improvement, not as a definitive roadmap. You never know when you might run into an unconscious bias. 3. Continuous Learning and Development I’m ever curious and always looking for learning opportunities. Look for opportunities to learn from other functions. The business world is continusly changing, and staying on top of the game, requires investing time to learn. Stay informed about your current industry trends but also look for best practices in others. 4. Advocate for Yourself People can’t read your mind, so they don’t know what your career goals and aspirations are. Don’t be afraid to articulate them to your leadership. Express your interest in new projects, responsibilities, or roles that align with your goals. 5. Adaptability and Resilience Career paths are rarely linear. My own has been a lattice. Be adaptable. Embrace challenges and view setbacks as learning experiences. Being in the driver's seat of your career means taking an intentional role in your professional development. I want to talk about something that keeps coming back in my mentoring sessions: the whole deal about life goals vs. career goals. We're all hustling and grinding, trying to climb that professional ladder, but are we giving enough thought to the bigger picture? Life goals are like the full-color version of our aspirations. They include all the good stuff (personal growth, solid relationships, mental and physical well-being, and - this is personal to my path now - even making a positive impact on the world). On the flip side, career goals can be a bit more black and white, tied to specific job achievements and climbing the success mountain. Raise your hand if you've ever found yourself glued to your work desk, chasing that promotion or perfecting your skills, only to realize you're missing out on other cool things in life or not investing enough time in building relationships. 🙋♂️ Guilty as charged, it’s pretty much the story of my 20s and 30s. Your professional goals may cost you personally if you do not set your personal goals first. If there are people in your life who will be impacted by your professional goals, having clear communication around your core values and your personal commitments, followed by what your professional goals are, may get you the support you need to successfully stay on track. Having goals aligned with your own values are actually a way of taking care of yourself and achieving the things you want. If you do not take care of yourself, you are short-changing everyone in your life, from your family to your team to your clients (and we all know that strong relationships are the real MVPs in life).
