Here’s the reality: • ChatGPT is now driving 2.5B prompts a day. • Google is morphing into an AI engine. • Buyers are skipping search and asking AI what to buy. If your product isn’t mentioned in the answer? You don’t exist. That’s the core of AEO, Answer Engine Optimization. And it plays by different rules than SEO. Kyle laid out 9 steps. Here’s my take on how to apply them: 1. Decide which prompts to own: Start by identifying prompts that align with your ICP and differentiators. Break them into: → Must-wins → Competitive battlegrounds → Moonshots Use tools like Profound to see what your buyers are actually asking. 2. Tailor strategy to each engine: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews all rank content differently. Only 11% of citations overlap. Pick your primary engine, win there first, then expand. 3. Write specific, definitive content: Vague content gets ignored. Cover narrow topics in extreme detail. Aim to be the answer to the question. 4. Write with: → Tables → Pros/cons → Feature breakdowns Make it easy for the model to quote you. 7. Make fewer images, more tables: LLMs can’t interpret images well. Use HTML tables and bullet points instead. If you do use visuals, write alt text like it’s a report caption. 8. Measure influence, not just clicks: Most AI answers are zero-click. Track share of voice. Ask “How did you hear about us?” Use brand lift, not traffic, as your north star. 9. Monitor citation drift: Citations shift fast. You can rank one week, disappear the next. Refresh your analysis weekly. Keep your content fresh or risk being replaced. Bottom line: This isn’t an SEO refresh. It’s a fundamental shift in how you get discovered.
