It's a fun treasure trove of useful information. • 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗨𝗦𝗘: AI (Generative AI especially) is not infallible. Learn about the mistakes it can make, the issues it can cause, and how to navigate them. • 𝗧𝗘𝗦𝗧 (𝗜𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸): For $15/mo, Canva is an amazing option because you can test alot of current capabilities. For $20/mo, Microsoft Copilot Pro can be added to your Office 365 account. Also for $20/mo, Google offers AI premium for your workspace (GMail, Docs, Sheets, etc). 2️⃣ 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗜-𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀. If your company offers access to AI tools, get access and use them according to their use policy. If not, create sample scenarios at home and practice. 3️⃣ 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Share that you're interested in learning more in your field. There's no shortage of free webinars, conferences, etc. talking about AI. Get involved. 5️⃣ 𝗘𝗻𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱. Professional organizations and technology vendors offer lots of free training for specific use cases. 6️⃣ 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁. Talk to your manager about opportunities. I frequently get questions from job seekers who want to change careers, but don't know what types of roles to target. Time and time again, one of my favorite suggestions is to leverage AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. The reason I love this suggestion is because it's a simple, but effective, starting point... Just use a prompt like: 🔷 "Based on the following resume, what are some different career options that could be a good fit for my skills and experience?" 🔷 "I've been a [Job Title] for the past 10+ years, but I'm looking for a change. What are some jobs that I could pivot to?" 🔷 "I have a degree in [Major] and am highly skilled in [Top Technical or Transferable Skills]. What are some jobs that could align with my background?" ➡ Any one of these prompts could give you some solid options to explore. Again, this is a good starting point... From there, you can pick ones that sound interesting to you and start reading job descriptions or conducting research to narrow down your target list. After that, you can aim to identify and follow industry thought leaders, conduct informational interviews with people in your new target field, and discuss creating a career change action plan with a mentor or coach. Career management is getting more complicated with GenAI. AI teams are potentially transitioning into IT or deployment teams where most of the work is focused on using the existing models with minimal tuning, wrapping it around an API, and evaluating it. Some of these teams used to either train AI models or build statistical models in the past. New hiring is also majorly focused on similar skill sets. Keeping those traditional AI skills is going to be a challenge for individuals. It might deplete the core AI skills of algorithms that might come in handy for a wide range of business problems. Job satisfaction will be hard to manage. This prompt work may not feel like a differentiating factor for the engineer from what it used to be. Career growth will start getting impacted. Role trajectory will be blurred out. When the euphoria of prompt engineering comes down to a few selected use cases and teams start exploring the old techniques for more reliable/economic results, these team structures and skills will be challenging to manage. If you are working in such teams or these kinds of problems, don’t just rely on prompt engineering as a sustainable skill set. It’s okay for a short time but go deep in the technology and learn about the core concepts. Try to get involved at the strategic level by understanding the bigger picture. Does this sound familiar? 🤖 AI as your intelligent assistant 🧠 The eclipse of human intelligence 👾 Rogue computing The year was 1968. The movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey Sci-fi writers have an uncanny ability to predict the future long before it happens. I viewed the film in the 70s. As AI advances in real time, a 1960s sci-fi writer's imagination serves as a warning for the dangers of unbridled technology growth. Stanley Kubrick's film defined the future of technology for decades. Sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke and his short story that influenced the movie imagined many of the relevant topics and predictions we care about today. As a workplace futurist, I review the predictions and analysis of scientists, architects, physicians, and neuroscientists, among others, to plot the future. My approach is to look at data and the trends to identify what's next. As you look to 2024, how will AI affect you, your career and your workplace? 5 predictions: 1. Skillset over role set; skills currency over titles. AI fluency and experience will keep you relevant. Ignoring upskilling and reskilling in your career will result in lower pay and fewer opportunities. If 50% of employees will need reskilling by 2025, according to the World Economic Forum, inquire what types of programs exist while interviewing. 2. AI growth rate is faster than you think. If AI is growing faster than you think, it's important to start where you are and get in the game. Consider this like the lessons of the internet. Pay attention to the trends and start researching potential roles. Use AI for the research. 3. Augmented working: AI as your intelligent assistant. Break down your workflows for the type of work you do. Deconstruct what can be automated and start experimenting with it. Figure out how you can save time on certain tasks now. Volunteer to be on an AI task force for your department. Join a group where you share prompts and prompt strategies for your profession. Imagine AI as your intelligent assistant, aiding professionals in various fields. AI’s augmentation of human intelligence and capabilities in the workplace is set to become a game-changer, increasing productivity and efficiency across industries. 4. Follow AI legislation to protect and maintain your business. Know what is happening. Understand the issues relevant to your profession. When the EU passes their legislation (they now have a draft), it will affect the way you will do business in other countries 5. Multimodal AI will increase your efficiency. A productivity winner. Multimodal AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that can process, understand, and generate multiple forms of data, such as text, images, audio, and video. Start exploring use cases.
