    LLMs, when used alone, cannot reliably be deployed in journalism, especially in real-time information generation. Here are the key issues and the ways to address them: 1. Inability to Adapt to New Information: LLMs excel at processing existing language data but struggle with “innovative thinking” and real-time adaptation, which are crucial in news reporting. Since they are trained on pre-existing datasets, they can’t dynamically update their knowledge post-training. For instance, when mining local government data, LLMs might overlook recent policy changes or budget updates. The solution involves developing real-time event detection systems that can monitor and analyze local government records, such as council meeting minutes or budget reports. Such systems use what is called an ‘editorial algorithm’ to identify noteworthy changes in the data based on criteria defined by journalists. 2. Lack of Guaranteed Accuracy: LLMs cannot ensure the accuracy of their output, as their responses are based on patterns from training data and lack a mechanism for verifying factual correctness. Continuing with the example above, an LLM might inaccurately write an analysis of a significant policy change detected by an editorial algorithm. To address this issue, we can develop domain-specific models trained to understand a particukar coverage area (like a beat reporter). Any analysis produced by an LLM should be subjected to automated fact-checking against quantifiable editorial benchmarks using reinforcement learning with AI feedback (RLAIF). These benchmarks involve cross-referencing with official records, verifying historical accuracy, and ensuring alignment with journalistic standards. This method, known as ‘editorial AI,’ makes the AI follow journalistic guidelines to maintain the integrity and accuracy of news content derived from complex data.

    During the Holidays, I had a lot of time to think about the current landscape of generative AI and the state-of-the-art from a business perspective. So much happened with AI in 2023, it was pretty impossible not to feel like your head was spinning most of the time, even if you're like me and have worked in the field for decades. The hype has been relentless and it's easy to feel like you're missing out if you haven't integrated ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Bing Copilot into every aspect of your business. Like any new technology, though, even one as evolutionary as generative AI, adopting too far too early comes with some pretty significant risk (here's a great example -- https://lnkd.in/eseUPC4Q). It's important to remember we're barely a year into the ramp-up of capabilities and adoption of generative AI. Here are some key points... Augmentation Over Replacement In its current state, generative AI is more adept at enhancing human capabilities than replacing them. It's definitely evolving and getting more capable, but we are still in a phase of discovery. Currently, we are identifying how these technologies can reduce personnel workload in areas like content generation and customer service, and this shift allows for a greater focus on uniquely human attributes such as creative problem-solving and relationship building, where true business value lies. Rigorous Quality Monitoring  Generative models, despite their advancements, still regularly produce outputs that are often logically inconsistent or factually incorrect. Put simply, taking model outputs at face value without validating results is a really bad idea. Implementing stringent quality control measures, particularly for content that impacts business or customers, is critical. This human oversight significantly reduces the risk of quality-related issues and is imperative to mitigating risk of misuse. Human Judgment at the Forefront of Decision-Making To make the point explicit, humans have to remain in the loop and, ideally, at the top of the decision-making pyramid. Generative AI can optimize for specific goals, but it simply lacks the nuanced judgment that human decision-makers bring to the table. Strategies involving AI must be firmly rooted in responsible AI principles. For leaders formulating plans in this area, it is imperative to initiate small, controlled pilot projects aimed at generating learning and enhancing specific workstreams. This approach may not feel very strategic, but it's far safer than broad-scale integration at this stage. While it may slow the realization of AI's full potential, it is a pragmatic route that allows an organization to build foundational experience and address important infrastructural concerns such as improving data quality and governance.
