Trapped by the WestJet data breach: A traveler’s digital nightmare

Hi there. A few days ago, while everyone else was asleep, I was sitting at the airport lounge, watching the departures board as it flickered. Suddenly, I felt a chill in the air.

Forget flight delays or jet lag: my airline, WestJet, had suffered a major data breach.

Like over a million other passengers, I was suddenly part of a digital horror story that could’ve grounded me for good.

How the WestJet cyberattack unfolded

Here’s how this nightmare played out:

June 13, 2025: Something weird happens inside WestJet’s systems. No announcements, just a quiet panic behind the scenes.

June 14: Rumors start flying. “Some systems aren’t safe,” they say. Flights are still running, but passengers can feel something’s off.

All summer long: Silence. The waiting game. Police and cybersecurity teams are investigating, but for travelers like me, just anxiety and endless refreshments of the news feed.

September 29: The truth drops: hackers did get in.

My personal info along with 1.2 million other people’s info is now out on the dark web being sold for exploitation.

So, what did they actually steal?

They got everything but my boarding pass.

They stole everyone’s name, birth date, phone number and email, passport or travel ID (the scariest one), and everyone’s WestJet account details.

What wasn’t stolen (thankfully)

They say no credit cards were compromised and booking passwords are safe.

But that doesn’t mean I’m sleeping easily. Because with the rest of that data, hackers can still:

  • Fake travel confirmations that look so real.
  • Steal loyalty points or alter bookings.
  • Create fake IDs.
  • Sell my info to who-knows-who.

However, now, every time I receive a ping from my phone, I’m a bit nervous.

Who’s at risk?

 Everyone.

Frequent flyers: You’ve probably stored tons of data: points, itineraries, even seat preferences. Gold Mine for hackers.

Casual travelers: Even if you only flew once last year, your data might still be floating somewhere shady online.

People are already reporting scam calls pretending to be WestJet. Others are seeing fake “trip confirmations.”

For me, every minute waiting for boarding feels like a gamble. If someone out there messes with my ticket, I could literally miss my flight home.

Every traveler has stories about lost luggage or delays…but losing your identity at 30,000 feet? That’s a whole new kind of nightmare.

If you got an alert that your data was in this breach, here’s my advice:

  • Don’t click random “WestJet” emails.
  • Double-check your bookings.
  • Watch strange calls or texts.

Next Sunday, you’ll find me at Gate B17, hoping to finally fly home…unless some hacker version of me cancels the ticket first.

I’ll never look at a boarding pass the same way again.
