The Tier4 Group Times: Volume 2, Issue 7
In Tech, Being Good Isn’t Always Good Enough.
The tech job market is undergoing a major shift. As AI continues to automate tasks across industries, the number of available roles, especially entry and mid-level positions, is shrinking. A recent report by Goldman Sachs highlights how this AI-driven contraction is creating a paradox: job postings are down, but the volume of highly qualified applicants is up. For tech professionals, this means the bar for landing interviews is higher than ever. It’s no longer just about having the right skills on paper, but about strategically positioning yourself in a crowded, competitive market.
Whether you’re actively job searching or just keeping an eye on what’s next, one thing is clear: being exceptional in your craft isn’t always enough to stand out. Today’s tech job market is moving faster than ever before, and your strategy matters as much as your skill set.
At Tier4 Group, we speak with hundreds of candidates and hiring managers every month, and we’ve seen firsthand how small tweaks in your job search approach can make a big difference.
Even the most qualified candidates can fail to land the role, and it often comes back to one thing: perception. You can't just know your stuff; you have to show it.
So, we’re kicking things off with some real talk from our recruiters: What do tech candidates consistently overlook in their approach? What can help you rise to the top of the deck, especially when competition is fierce?
If you’re ready to job search smarter (not harder), read on for insights, tips, and the latest news from Tier4 Group.👇

Tier4 Group, a leading technology and executive recruitment firm based in Atlanta, GA, is proud to announce its recognition on the 2025 Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies, marking the seventh consecutive year the company has earned this honor.
“This isn’t just another growth story,” said Betsy Robinson , President & CEO of Tier4 Group. “It’s proof of sustained momentum, resilience, and the trust our clients and consultants place in us year after year. Fewer than one percent of companies have appeared on the list seven years in a row, highlighting Tier4 Group’s ability to sustain growth through changing economic conditions and a constantly evolving technology landscape.
"Seven consecutive years on the INC 5000 is a milestone that speaks to our unwavering focus on quality, relationships, and results," said Robert Bouchard, COO, Tier4 Group. "It reflects the hard work of our team, the loyalty of our clients, and the trust of our candidates. We’re honored by this recognition and remain committed to delivering the exceptional service and outcomes our clients and candidates have come to expect from Tier4 Group."
To our clients, partners, and the incredible Tier4 Group team—thank you for making this possible. Here’s to pushing boundaries and delivering even more value in the years ahead.”

5 Things Recruiters Wish Every Tech Candidate Knew
By Jonathan Palombo, Marketing Communications Manager
Finding your next tech role isn’t just about knowing your stuff; it’s also about showing it. At Tier4 Group, we work across multiple industries and various functions like development, data analytics, engineering, cybersecurity, and more. We’ve seen it all, but something we often see is outstanding candidates getting overlooked. Why? It’s not because they weren’t qualified (many are highly qualified), but because they missed some key steps that make a big difference in today’s hiring market.
Recent findings from a report by Goldman Sachs highlighting the effects of AI on the job market showed that the IT sector is being hit especially hard, with many organizations freezing hiring at entry-level roles and exploring the capability of AI integration and automation. While the total number of available jobs decreases, the number of qualified candidates increases. The lesson? AI has raised the bar, whether we like it or not. Now, candidates must rethink their approach to the market – skills are not enough. Whether it’s getting your foot in the door or advancing your career, strategically positioning yourself is a must to stand out.
There’s good news – our Recruiters at Tier4 Group are experts at what it takes to stand out – they know exactly what hiring managers are looking for. Our recruiters combine their deep technical expertise with robust recruiting tools and methods to not just find qualified talent, but to prepare them and set them up for success in the hiring process. Our work goes beyond the position – it's about the relationship. We asked our Recruiting team a simple question: What are the top five things you wish every candidate you spoke to knew? Here’s what they had to say.
Your LinkedIn Profile Matters More Than Ever
Your LinkedIn profile is not just a profile; it’s a resume and a glimpse into your professional background. Hiring managers will often compare your resume to your LinkedIn profile to ensure the information matches.
“Make sure you put as much effort into your LinkedIn profile as you do your resume, explains Kim Kilgoar , Director of Recruiting, Tier4 Group. “Most hiring managers and recruiters are looking at your LI profile and ensuring it matches what is on your resume, and also hoping to get to know you a little better.”
Beware of Outdated Skills
LinkedIn is a great way to highlight not only your professional experience, but also your relevant skills. Crystal Rehling , Senior Technical Recruiter at Tier4 Group, reminds us that the Skills Section on your LinkedIn Profile is one of the most crucial parts of your profile. “Your Skills Section needs to be focused and current with the skills you’re using now and want to take into your next role. Remove anything that’s outdated or irrelevant (delete the fluff!). Keeping this section targeted will help recruiters reach out with roles that truly match your background and career goals.
Nailing Your Profile Picture
One of the very first impressions a hiring manager will see is your LinkedIn Profile picture, and it can be an instant turn-off. “A good, clear, forward-facing profile picture on your LinkedIn profile is so important,” says Kim. “It is one critical part in determining if a profile is legitimate. A landscape or the back of someone or a grainy picture is not an appropriate representation.” Don’t overlook your profile picture – ensure that your picture, preferably a headshot, is clean and professional.
Energy & Confidence Make a Difference
The job market can be tough. Rejection is a part of the game, and going through countless resume submittals and interviews without much to show for it can result in discouragement. We’re all human, and the employment search can be difficult, but no matter what we face, how we show up can make all the difference. “I’ve been a recruiter for over five years, and if there’s one piece of advice I can give to anyone heading into an interview, it’s this: show energy and confidence,” explains Christopher Frana , Technical Recruiter, Tier4 Group. “Employers are not only looking at your resume, they’re also looking at how you carry yourself. Positivity, confidence, and enthusiasm can set you apart and boost your chances of landing that next opportunity.” Chris reminds us that bringing a positive mindset and strong presence into each interview truly makes a difference.
Technical Skills Aren’t Everything
Sometimes even the most qualified candidates on paper aren’t even considered for a final offer. While skills are important, they aren’t everything. “Communication, collaboration, and adaptability matter just as much as technical skills in many environments,” explains Lexi Dolby , Senior Technical Recruiter, Tier4 Group. You have to display these traits during the interview.”
Showcasing these qualities through your own experiences can help the employer to get a sense for how you might fit in with the culture, handle high-pressure situations, and gauge your overall fit.
Arrive on Time for Video Interviews
Video interviews are now a common practice and are more prevalent following the advent of hybrid and remote work environments. Many candidates, however, still make simple mistakes during video interviews that can torpedo their candidacy. Kim knows all too well how certain behaviors can impact a candidate’s chances of success.
“Arrive one to two minutes early to a video interview and do not make your interviewer wait or must message you to see if you will be attending. If you know you will run late, give your interviewer a heads-up before your scheduled call.”
Kim also warns candidates to be prepared to be on camera and to make sure they do not have to be asked to turn on their camera – these issues can often leave a bad first impression, as it is likely the first time the employer is seeing you.
Your Recruiter is Your Advocate
Partnering with a recruiter means you have someone in your corner who is going to advocate for you during every step of the hiring process. “We are ‘candidate advocates,’” said Lexi. “The more you open up to us and share your goals, salary expectations, and updates throughout the process, the better we can position you for success in the search.
Transparency and trust are key factors in any successful search. Our recruiters at Tier4 Group work hard to build trust with each and every candidate we serve. When our candidates succeed, we succeed, and we share in that celebration.
Every person’s job search is a unique journey full of twists and turns. At Tier4 Group, we aim to come alongside and help you navigate your search with confidence and ease. We work hard every day to connect top tech talent to employers where they aren’t just a fit, but where they’ll truly thrive.
We’re in your corner, and if you want an advocate to help guide and lead you towards your next career opportunity, join our nationwide network of top-tier talent.

Retained Spotlight
When it Comes to Executive Search, Bigger Isn't Always Better
By Tino Mantella, President & Managing Partner, Retained
When you’re searching for your next exceptional leader to take you into the future of your business, the allure of partnering with a big-name search firm is tempting. Sure, their scale and content output are impressive, but is bigger always better? Small boutique executive search firms like Retained offer distinct advantages that could give you an edge in recruitment. Deciding the type of search firm you will use for an executive search is a big decision, but a small boutique executive search firm could be the best fit. We’ll explore how small boutique executive search firms can provide the edge.
Leadership Expertise
One of the biggest benefits of working with a smaller firm is that you’ll work alongside proven leaders with years of experience who have been in your shoes and know your needs. At Retained, our leaders will be involved in every step of the process, from the first call until a candidate’s placement. This ensures you get the attention and the level of expertise you deserve.
A Relationship-first Approach
When you partner with a boutique search firm, you can forge a close relationship with leadership who come alongside you to execute the search. During the process, you have greater access to leadership, benefit from their strong networks, and, as a result, are better positioned for success.
When you partner with Retained, for instance, we become an extension of your organization, guaranteeing the highest level of discretion and confidentiality. The relationship goes beyond the now; we work to ensure our clients are positioned for future success, and we maintain relationships beyond the initial search to support our clients and their continuous growth.
Going Beyond Qualifications
Large search firms may utilize standardized processes to assess your needs and the qualifications you desire in your candidate. However, small boutique firms can go much deeper, working alongside you to understand the leadership landscape within your organization and your culture on a profoundly personal level. A Better understanding of these areas will result in the perfect fit to enhance your team and help you reach your objectives better. Knowing the client’s culture intimately also enables a more seamless transition for the leader. Our experts can coach the candidates throughout the process, preparing them to enter the role with confidence.
Specialization
When needing a search, tailoring your choice of a partner can make a world of difference. For instance, hiring a small boutique search firm specializing in the technology sector can offer you a boost if you are seeking a Chief Information Officer or a Chief Technology Officer. Firms that specialize in a specific industry know it inside and out, and their networks often enable them to pull together a diverse pool of candidates.
At Retained, we source senior technology executives, C-suite, nonprofit, and fractional/interim executives. By specializing in these types of searches, we can put forth the optimal pool of candidates that best fit your needs. Tino Mantella, President & Managing Partner at Retained, led the largest tech trade association in North America for over a decade. His tenure not only enabled him to connect directly with hundreds of tech leaders, but he also developed an intimate knowledge of the requirements to be the best in various tech roles.
Innovation
Boutique search firms can innovate quickly without going through a maze of bureaucracy to secure approvals. While large firms have many resources, they are not as agile or flexible due to their size. Boutique firms combine innovative search strategies with robust tools and technology to ensure a successful search. A smaller firm can improve and optimize more quickly. Despite fewer resources, a more limited number of searches allows for a greater focus and allocation of resources to your account, proving to be more effective.
Bigger Isn’t Always Better
When choosing a trusted partner to find your next leader, bigger isn’t always better. While there may be some advantages to a large firm, small boutique search firms like Retained are positioned to give you a unique edge in talent acquisition. Their tailored and personalized approach, deep industry knowledge, and leadership expertise can be the difference maker in finding the perfect fit the first time. This is why you can trust boutique firms like Retained to get the job done right.
