Things To Consider When Choosing A Digital Or Tech Skill

‘Peter, I also want to start earning online’.

This was said by an old friend of mine two years ago.

I was surprised when this friend reached out to me because just two years ago, I knew how much money he invested into learning a digital skill. 

The only thing I didn’t know was if it was a skill, he had an interest in, maybe I would have asked him why he wanted to learn the skill;

But I assumed that he had done his research on the skill before registering to learn the skill. 

‘You should be making money already from the digital skill you learned then now, what’s the issue?’ I inquired.

You wouldn’t believe that my friend told me he stopped learning the skill midway because he realized that he had no interest in it. 

I asked him why he registered for the course if he had no interest. And his reply was:

‘Well, I learned it is a very lucrative skill and I know someone who earns millions from it’ he said.

This is one mistake a lot of people make; you should not only consider how lucrative a skill is before you venture into it so that you will not end up like this my friend. 

Everyone indeed wants to make money working from home but choosing a lucrative skill is beyond just looking at how much money you can make from it. 

There are other important things to consider which will help you choose the right skill. 

Having to choose from a list of numerous digital skills can sometimes be a difficult task for a lot of people.

This is because all digital skills are lucrative, and no digital skill is a waste of time or effort if well mastered and practiced.

Here are a few things to think about when picking a digital or tech skill:

📝Step 1: Finding out your interests.

What are your interests?

Your interest is a key factor in deciding and choosing a career.

You need to consider what you like doing. This is because you might get tired if you venture into skills, you have no interest in.

I’m a Social Media Marketer & Strategist and I do well in this field for a reason, I might not have been able to do so well if I was into Coding.

This is because it’s not a skill I have an interest in, so even if I have a friend who makes millions from this skill, I might end up not making a thousand from it. That is even if I’m able to finish the necessary trainings successfully. 

This is why your interest is something that matters.

📝Step 2: Arrange Skills in order of importance.

After you have been able to identify skills in your area of interest, arrange these skills hierarchically in order of importance starting from the most preferred to the least preferred skill.

When making this arrangement, consider the skill that most aligns with your profession or career. 

For example, if you are a journalist and you love writing, you may consider news writing because it aligns with your profession.

For someone who is a tech enthusiast and loves to write, the person may consider technical writing. This will help you in choosing the right digital skill to learn.

📝Step 3: Mentorship

It is important to get a mentor in your chosen field who can put you through what to do and what steps to take.

Look for someone who is experienced in your field and can advise you and help you make a better and more informed decision in your chosen field.

You may even consider getting training from such a person or seeking suggestions on the best platforms to learn the skill.

One thing with digital skills is that you have to be committed to the learning process.

This is why choosing something that interests you is important so that you won’t get tired during the learning process.

Also, staying consistent with the skill is very important because this is the way you can improve your expertise in the field and also become known for that particular skill.
