October Newsletter

Kaya (Hello),

I was fortunate to have attend this year’s Oceanic Palliative Care Conference (25OPCC) conference, which focused on system improvement. As a clinician, it was inspiring to see the development and growth across our sector. As the manager of an education program, I’m energised by the opportunities to evolve PaSCE, so we continue to deliver relevant, practical education that supports teams across WA.

You’ll see some refinements to our existing content and the development of new courses, while staying true to our person-centred and service-oriented approach. One priority area is volunteering. We want our education to be even more relevant and transferable for volunteers and services that support them. If you’re a volunteer or manage a volunteer program, please email PaSCE@cancerwa.asn.au I’d value your input.

Also, quick update on our Volunteer Education: thank you to those who’ve joined our education over the past year — it’s been a pleasure meeting and learning with such generous people. I’m delighted to share that Dr Kevin Yuen formerly a palliative care consultant, will lead this education going forward. You can join Kevin and the team at our 5 November session (details below).

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day (WHPCD): 11th October “This year’s theme calls for universal access to palliative care. For those working in residential aged care, it’s a reminder of the importance of best-practice education in palliative care—visit whpca.org for resources, stories and ways to get involved.” https://thewhpca.org/about/  Podcast: To mark WHPCD, we’ve recorded a special Keeping up with PaSCE episode with a modern palliative care pioneer Ed Gaudian, scheduled for release on 11 October. Keep an eye on our channels and CCWA's National Carers Week: 12-18 October  Our Friends, Carers WA are inviting all Australians to take part in recognising and celebrating carers. WA's theme this year is "You are one, know one or will know one". With almost Three million Australians taking extra responsibilities caring for friends and family members living with physical or mental illness.  Find local events and updates please visit: National Carers Week | Carers WA

Residential Aged Care Education

RACEPC Medical Round Table

Over 45 medical specialists and colleagues from palliative and residential aged care came together at the end of September for an evening of vibrant discussion and knowledge-sharing. Hosted by RACEPC, our panelists Dr Ian Dey, Dr Emily Hill, Dr Elissa Campbell, Dr Paula Moffat and Dr Fermin Blanco Mayo guided a round-table conversation focused on breaking down silos and strengthening cohesion across the many services and specialties involved in end-of-life care.

Key takeaways included:

  • Practical ideas to streamline communication between services and clinicians
  • Opportunities to align education across settings to improve continuity of care
  • Interest in ongoing, interactive forums to troubleshoot shared challenges

The night was a genuine success, and we’re keen to host similar collaborative events in future. If your service would like to co-host or propose a topic, we’d love to hear from you.

In-person education: We’re currently scheduling site-based sessions, including immersive simulation. To discuss what would suit your facility, email RACEPCE@cancerwa.asn.au.

Free webinars for RACH staff: New dates will be announced shortly stay tuned.
