October Newsletter- Aged Care

Welcome to PaSCE's Aged Care Newsletter, a monthly update for aged care staff on our upcoming Palliative Care education and events.

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day: Awareness and Equity

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is an annual, unified day of action held on the second Saturday of October. It brings together communities, health professionals, carers, patients and advocates to:

  • Raise awareness of palliative and hospice care
  • Celebrate and honour the work of care providers
  • Advocate for equitable access to palliative care globally

This year’s theme, “Achieving the Promise: Universal Access to Palliative Care,” highlights the ongoing need to ensure that everyone can access timely, person-centred palliative care.

While many countries have endorsed palliative care, access remains unequal — even in developed health systems. More than 60 million people worldwide need palliative care each year, yet access to quality care remains limited in many parts of the world.

The day is a powerful opportunity to share stories, build community, and promote best-practice approaches across all health and aged care settings.

Visit whpca.org to explore stories, tools, and resources to support your practice and engage with this important global initiative.

PaSCE Education Updates

 Residential Aged Care Education

Thank you to everyone who attended the RACEPC Medical Round Table

Article content

It was a wonderful evening of vibrant discussion with health professionals from palliative care, a range of specialties, ambulance services and residential aged care.

Survey feedback has been overwhelmingly positive:

“Every question was answered honestly and professionally.” “Really important topic that requires ongoing discussion. It was good to hear different perspectives.”

Two respondents provided these reflections, and 100% of survey participants reported that the Medical Round Table was beneficial and worthwhile. All respondents indicated they left the evening with a greater awareness of the services available, and how these could complement Residential Aged Care Health Services (RACHS).

A huge thank you to our expert panel — Dr Ian Dey, Dr Paula Moffat, Dr Fermin Blanco Mayo, Dr Elissa Campbell and Dr Emily Hill — for generously sharing your time, both in the lead-up and on the night.

CPD certificates will be sent out shortly, including a link to provide feedback if you haven’t had a chance to do so yet. We look forward to hosting similar collaborative events in the future.

Interested in Hosting In-Person Education? We’re currently planning our immersive simulation education and are looking for new host locations. Keeping up with the PaSCE Podcast: Episode 14

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

To mark this year’s theme — “Achieving the Promise: Universal Access to Palliative Care” — we spoke with Ed Gaudian, a leader in WA palliative care.

Ed has seen the field evolve from an oncology focus to supporting people with complex, diverse needs. He welcomes new aged care standards as a positive shift, backed by stronger education and teamwork.

He reminds us that often, “it’s the smallest things that matter.” From final wishes to simple acts of comfort, person-centred care is built on human connection.
