Meet the Experts Who Answer Auto Techs' Toughest Questions

“At 50 years old, I was tired of turning wrenches, getting dirty and laying on concrete floors, so I put my resume together,” says automotive technical assistant Chris Learning. “I was contacted by a recruiter hiring for the Ford Technical Assistance Center.”

The Ford Technical Assistance Center is where automotive techs at Ford and Lincoln dealerships can get expert help on their toughest vehicle questions. The hotline experts take on the issues from the initial call to resolution and coordinate with the field service team to determine when onsite help is needed.

“Our mission is to work closely with technicians to help them get customers back in their vehicles and on the road as quickly as possible,” technical hotline case analyst Hailee P. Paul says. “This is a great role for anyone who enjoys providing great customer service, having a diverse workload day by day, and researching and analyzing problems.”

The career transition was ideal for Chris and his decades of wide-ranging automotive repair experience. “I help dealership techs diagnose and repair Ford and Lincoln vehicles. Today’s vehicles are so technologically advanced and they’re evolving all the time. I am continually being trained in how these systems operate and I can share that knowledge with dealership techs all over the country.

Other than his time in the military, Chris spent most of his career in small independent shops, so he was nervous about adapting to a large team environment. To his relief, he found that “everyone here at the Technical Assistance Center is friendly and always willing to help me when needed.” Part of his role now is mentoring other new hires as they come onboard.

Hailee came to Ford five years ago as a technical hotline case analyst after graduating from Southern Illinois University with her bachelor’s degree in automotive technology. From her great-grandparents’ 1967 F-250 pickup to Hailee’s F-150, her family has owned Fords for four generations, so joining the company felt like a natural fit.

She finds satisfaction in helping techs solve complex automotive problems, and says Ford’s benefits, like the wellness lifestyle spending account, support her outdoor hobbies and her worklife balance. Chris says the paid volunteer opportunities, like helping to paint a gymnasium for a nonprofit children’s program, allow him to give back and use his hands-on skills.

“I’ve been here since 2013,” Chris says, “and it has been the best career decision I ever made. I still love doing what I do!"
