GCCs go all in on Indian AI talent
Remember when Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India were just glorified back offices for international companies? Those days are officially over.
Driving the news: India’s GCCs are witnessing a 131% year-on-year surge in demand for AI specialists, with as many as 3,500 roles currently open.
- The spike comes as global firms increasingly rely on India to bridge the AI talent gap

According to experts, GCCs are no longer just support centres but are now piloting AI use cases that directly impact business outcomes.
Tell me more: India today hosts around 6 lakh AI professionals, accounting for 16% of the global talent pool, second only to the US.
- That number is expected to double to 12.5 lakh by 2027, according to BCG
GCCs are also evolving from handling traditional delivery tasks to creating intellectual property, using tools like GitHub Copilot and Agentic AI to speed up experimentation cycles from a year to just 90 days.
What’s the big deal?: The impact is tangible: Tesco’s Bengaluru GCC has achieved 35-40% productivity gains by applying AI across operations.
- Many GCCs are retraining staff to handle higher-order AI work, turning talent shortages into reskilling opportunities
As GCCs scale these efforts, India is emerging as a global hub not just for delivery but for AI-driven innovation and strategy.
