Making Connections That Matter: Why Public Events Like the Ohio State Fair Are Worth the Investment

This summer, the Ohio Department of Children and Youth (DCY) returned to the Ohio State Fair with Discover DCY, our engaging, family-friendly booth designed to connect directly with the families we serve. From beloved characters to hands-on activities, we created an experience that was fun, informative, and meaningful for visitors of all ages.

And the results speak for themselves: more than 20,000 fairgoers stopped by to explore our programs, talk with staff, and take-home helpful information about how DCY supports children from cradle to career.

Why It Matters

Participating in large public events like the Ohio State Fair is about more than visibility, it’s about connection. These events give organizations a unique opportunity to engage their intended audiences face-to-face, break down barriers, and share what we do in a tangible, memorable way.

For DCY, the fair was a chance to:

  • Introduce our agency and mission to Ohioans in a friendly, accessible environment.

  • Reconnect with returning visitors who remembered us from last year, proving the lasting impact of showing up.

  • Spark valuable conversations with parents while their kids participated in fun, interactive activities like sensory tiles, DrawAlive art, putt-putt games, and our quiet reading area.

  • Distribute thousands of postcards and resource materials to families across the state.

Staff Connection and Purpose

More than 100 DCY staff members took part in the booth, from program leads to HR, finance, and support staff. Even members of senior leadership participated—demonstrating their commitment to being present, listening, and connecting with Ohio families. For many, this was a rare and powerful opportunity to interact directly with the families they work every day to support.

A Broader Message for Organizations

If your organization is considering whether to invest time and resources in events like these, do it. While the planning takes effort, the payoff in community connection, staff engagement, and mission awareness is invaluable. These events aren’t just outreach; they’re a reminder of why we do the work.

The Ohio State Fair gave DCY a chance to laugh with families, listen to their stories, and share the support we’re building together across the state. In a field where the challenges are often great, opportunities like this fill our team with hope, purpose, and renewed commitment.
