How and Why I've Made Curriculum Storyboards an Integral Part of My Work
Curriculum design can often feel overwhelming -- long lists of standards, dense instructional plans, and an ever-growing pile of requirements.
Educators want to create meaningful learning experiences, but without a clear roadmap, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters.
What if there was a way to make curriculum both structured and flexible?
What if it was easier to communicate not just what students need to learn, but why it matters to them?
That’s where Curriculum Storyboards come in.
Since Heidi Hayes Jacobs and I published our book, Streamlining the Curriculum: Using the Storyboard Approach to Frame Compelling Learning Journeys in 2023, I’ve found that using this approach transforms curriculum from a static document into an interactive guide that empowers teachers, engages students, and fosters transparency with families.
It has become a cornerstone of my work as a consultant, helping schools streamline their vision for learning and make curriculum more actionable.
From Vision to Action
The foundation of strong curriculum design has always been backward design -- starting with the desired results, shaping the assessment plan, and then mapping out the learning experiences. But I realized early on that while this framework is incredibly effective, the way we represent it has a major impact on how it is received and implemented.
A traditional curriculum document, packed with standards, objectives, and long lists of instructional strategies, can feel overwhelming to educators. Even when the design is strong, if teachers can’t easily access or engage with it, it often gets set aside.
That’s where Curriculum Storyboards have completely transformed the way I approach curriculum design with schools and districts.
The Power of Visualizing Learning
Curriculum Storyboards provide an accessible, big-picture view of the learning experience. They help teachers, students, and even families see not just what will be covered, but why it matters and how it connects.
When curriculum is clear, engaging, and visually structured, it is more likely to be implemented in a way that fosters deep learning.
One of the major benefits I’ve seen with Curriculum Storyboards is how they help answer the question that students often ask -- sometimes explicitly, sometimes indirectly through disengagement: Why should I care?
Storyboards lay out the story of the learning experience, making connections between content, essential questions, and real-world application.

When students understand the purpose behind their learning, they engage at a deeper level and take more ownership of their journey.
Supporting Educators in Implementation
Teachers today are managing an incredible amount of information and responsibility. Many feel like they are barely keeping their heads above water. The last thing they need is another cumbersome curriculum document that adds complexity rather than clarity.
With Curriculum Storyboards, our goal is to help schools streamline and clarify what truly matters. It’s not about adding more, it’s about making smart decisions about what to consolidate, what to emphasize, and how to provide a guiding structure without overwhelming teachers.
This process ensures that when educators need to make in-the-moment instructional decisions, they have a strong framework to guide them while still allowing room for personalization and flexibility.
Creating Transparency and Shared Understanding
One of the most powerful aspects of Curriculum Storyboards is their ability to increase transparency. Curriculum is not just for teachers -- it’s for students, families, and the broader learning community.
By making curriculum more accessible, we help families understand what their children are learning and why. We create opportunities for students to take a more active role in monitoring their progress and developing ownership over their education.
In my work with schools and districts, I have seen firsthand how implementing Curriculum Storyboards fosters stronger alignment, clearer communication, and a more cohesive approach to teaching and learning.
This tool has become an essential part of how I help educators build curriculum that is not only well-designed but also deeply impactful.
Looking Ahead
As Curriculum Storyboards continue to evolve, I am excited to explore new ways to enhance their usability and integration into the broader curriculum development process.
Whether through refined templates, digital integration, or expanded professional learning opportunities, I see this approach as a key driver in making curriculum more meaningful and effective.
I’m passionate about helping schools bring clarity and purpose to their curriculum. If you’re interested in learning more about how Curriculum Storyboards can support your work, I’d love to connect and explore possibilities together.
