Have You Hired Your Future Boss?
Early in my career, I recall one of my managers saying to me, “One of these days I’m going to work for you”. Of course, my initial reaction to this statement was one of skepticism, assuming it was an ill-fated attempt on his part to make me feel good and build my confidence as a young professional trying to find my footing in the new company. In no way did I ever assume he was serious. How could he be? He was clearly more experienced and established as an executive, highly regarded in the HR field with an impeccable reputation.
Many years later, I’ve come to realize there was real authenticity behind these words. While this “reverse” in reporting relationship didn’t materialize with this leader – I had gone on to work for other companies, other leaders, achieving my version of success. I now fully appreciate the sentiment!
I’ve had the great pleasure of hiring many people along the course of my career and I can say without question, a few of them are so talented, I’d consider it an honor to work FOR them!
Being able to identify raw potential and capability is one of my greatest pleasures. Witnessing this occur in real time is like magic. And feeling such confidence in their ability to lead ME is a gift.
To all my leaders/influencers out there, the next time you have an opportunity to bring someone onto your team, I encourage you to find someone so gifted, they could eventually be your future manager!
