Salt Lake City felt like the right place for this conversation. Framed by mountains that have seen epochs shift, the city played host to a different kind of transformation, one unfolding not in geology, but in language.
The TAUS Massively Multilingual AI Conference 2025 gathered some of the brightest minds from OpenAI, Dell, Centific, Translated, Lionbridge, Uber, and dozens of others to confront a simple but unsettling question:
Are we evolving what we have, or reinventing everything we know?
Across two days of keynotes, panels, and heated hallway debates, it became clear that we are living through a turning point, not just for translation technology, but for the very function of language in global communication. The familiar vocabulary of our industry, TMS, TM, MT, LQA, suddenly felt like artifacts from another era.
This year’s TAUS wasn’t about tools; it was about reasoning. It was about AI systems that don’t just process words, but attempt to understand relationships, context, and cultural nuance. It was about reinvention, of workflows, business models, and even professional identities.
If last year’s conversations centered on AI integration, this year’s focused on AI orchestration. Not “how can we use AI,” but “how do we design the multilingual systems that will define our future?”
In that sense, TAUS 2025 was less a conference and more a mirror, reflecting back to us what the language industry has become and what it still needs to become. And from the first keynote to the final roundtable, one theme resonated: the shift from translation as task to language as infrastructure.
Learning from Less: Lukasz Kaiser’s Vision for Multilingual Reasoning
If there was a single moment that set the intellectual tone for TAUS 2025, it was Lukasz Kaiser’s (OpenAI) keynote, “Multilingual LLMs in the Age of Reasoning.”
Kaiser didn’t just discuss technology, he examined its philosophy. Why, he asked, are large language models still not great in some languages? Why is machine learning for complex human challenges, like curing diseases, still so hard?
His answer was disarmingly simple: Machines need to learn from less data.
That single line reframed the conversation for the entire day. The age of exponential scaling, more GPUs, more tokens, more compute, is giving way to an age of intelligent efficiency. The next leap forward won’t come from pouring in more data, but from systems that reason their way through less of it.
Kaiser drew a sharp distinction between statistical learning and experiential understanding. Using a poetic example, he compared Ogden Nash’s short poem “The Dog” with its Polish translations by Stanisław Barańczak and others, each maintaining rhythm, rhyme, and wit, yet uniquely human in interpretation.
A model can reproduce linguistic form, but it cannot replicate experience. As Kaiser put it, “The real-life experience of a dog jumping on you can’t be learned by a machine.”
That single metaphor encapsulated the entire dilemma of multilingual AI: machines can translate, summarize, and simulate, but they still don’t feel the world they describe.
Still, Kaiser’s outlook wasn’t pessimistic. It was pragmatic. He suggested that the way forward isn’t to expect LLMs to become human, but to design workflows that make human reasoning and machine reasoning complement each other.
“Don’t throw data away,” he warned. Post-edits, review logs, feedback, every linguistic interaction is an untapped signal. These are not byproducts of translation; they are training data for reasoning systems.

A recurring theme was inclusion. The participants examined how disparities in data and tooling risk widening gaps between dominant and underrepresented languages, and how governance, curation, and access policies influence who is visible in multilingual AI systems.
Technical robustness also featured prominently. The panel discussed the ongoing challenges of bias, toxicity, and hallucination, and the importance of evaluation and feedback mechanisms that can operate continuously at scale rather than intermittently at the end of a workflow.
By the close, a shared contour had emerged: progress in multilingual AI depends as much on responsible design and equitable representation as on algorithmic advances. The path forward is not only better models, but better alignment between technology, human oversight, and the diverse communities those systems are meant to serve.
Philipp Koehn and the Next Era of Machine Translation
Few voices in our industry command the same mix of academic gravitas and pragmatic clarity as Philipp Koehn (Johns Hopkins University). His presentation, “The Next Era of MT,” was part history lesson, part blueprint for the future, and a timely reminder that machine translation isn’t being replaced by AI; it’s becoming AI.
Koehn opened by reminding the audience of an often-overlooked truth: the transformer model, the backbone of today’s large language models, was born from machine translation research. In other words, the very architecture driving generative AI today owes its DNA to decades of MT innovation.
He explored why MT had succeeded where many other AI subfields had struggled. Its strength, he explained, lies in a unique combination of relentless evaluation, real-world pragmatism, open collaboration, and intellectual humility. The localization community’s fixation on testing, both human and automatic, kept its progress measurable. Its focus on production feedback kept it grounded in real use cases. Its open culture of shared data and tools fueled collective advancement. And its realism, its refusal to oversell, ensured credibility even through hype cycles. Together, these traits have turned MT from an academic curiosity into one of the most mature disciplines in applied AI
That same pragmatism now shapes Koehn’s vision for agentic translation, where AI doesn’t simply produce an output but follows a reasoning process inspired by how humans translate. In this new paradigm, a model first generates a rough draft focused on adequacy, then refines it for fluency, and finally revises it iteratively for tone, terminology, and style. Each stage functions like a micro-agent in a larger orchestration, an intelligent workflow that mirrors human craftsmanship while maintaining explainability and control.
He also highlighted the growing role of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) in mitigating bias and hallucination. In multilingual settings, RAG becomes more than just a technical fix, it represents a philosophical shift from probability-driven output to evidence-driven translation, where systems retrieve and verify relevant context before generating text.
Looking ahead, Koehn predicted that the next major frontier will be expressive speech translation, where text, tone, and emotion converge into a unified system capable of conveying intent, rhythm, and feeling across languages. Translation, he suggested, will evolve from a textual process into a performative one, where machines learn not only what we say but how we mean it.
Koehn’s conclusion carried quiet weight: machine translation began as a research challenge and became an indispensable tool. Now, it stands to become the framework through which all language intelligence evolves.
Quality at Scale: Redefining Standards in the Age of AI
Philipp Koehn offered a look at how technology might mature. The discussion that followed asked what happens when maturity meets velocity. Moderated by Amir Kamran (TAUS) and featuring Ron Hewitt (TRSB), Ashley Mondello (Language Scientific), and Stéphane Cinguino (Acolad), “The Quality at Scale Conversation” tackled one of the most complex questions facing the industry today: everyone agrees that quality matters, but as AI accelerates the pace of content generation, do we still define it in the same way?
The session revolved around the widening gap between production speed and review capacity. Generative AI has enabled organizations to produce multilingual content faster than traditional quality-assurance models can possibly keep up. Language teams that once focused on precision and completeness are now learning to manage quality as a spectrum—balancing automation, data, and selective human oversight.
The panel examined how these dynamics are reshaping both processes and mindsets. In an environment where scale makes exhaustive human review impossible, quality is no longer an end state but a continuous, adaptive process. The conversation explored how automation can support this shift, using data-driven monitoring and iterative validation to identify where human input adds the most value.
Another key point of discussion was the evolving notion of ownership. As AI systems take on a greater share of linguistic production, the responsibility for quality is increasingly distributed across technologies, workflows, and people. From Data to Intelligence: Paco Guzmán’s Frontier Data Paradigm
The second day of TAUS 2025 opened with a keynote that could have been delivered at a research symposium or a startup incubator alike. Paco Guzmán (Handshake AI) took the stage to present “Shaping the Future of AI – Creating Frontier Data for Frontier Models,” a talk that challenged one of the industry’s most ingrained habits: treating data as a byproduct rather than an asset
Guzmán began by stating what every practitioner knows but few admit, training AI is never linear. It’s a process of continual back-and-forth refinement, an iterative dialogue between models, humans, and data. “Don’t throw data away,” he urged. “Store everything.” Every post-edit, review log, timestamp, and snippet of partial feedback holds value. Each represents a fragment of human reasoning that can inform a smarter model tomorrow.
He reframed the act of translation itself as a data-crafting exercise. Instead of thinking in abstract linguistic terms, teams should think in tasks. What problem are we actually solving, ranking, classification, generation? Once that’s clear, data can be reshaped into examples the model can learn from: pairs, triplets, prompts, or structured chunks aligned with the intended goal.
Another crucial message was efficiency. “Use foundation models,” Guzmán said. “Don’t start from scratch.” His argument was that customization, not reinvention, drives the next wave of progress. Fine-tuning or prompting with a small, well-designed set of examples can yield results that rival large-scale training runs, provided the data behind them is coherent and deliberate.
He also drew a direct line between LLMs and Retrieval-Augmented Generation systems. Both, he explained, depend on well-structured, task-oriented data. Whether we’re building translators, question-answering bots, or reasoning agents, the success of these systems is determined less by the model’s architecture than by the quality and intent of the data we feed them.
Perhaps Guzmán’s most provocative statement was philosophical rather than technical. “Your data,” he said, “is your IP.” In a world where linguistic output can be generated by anyone, ownership of high-quality, human-informed data becomes a company’s true competitive advantage, and, in some cases, even a potential revenue stream.
His message resonated across the audience of LSP leaders, technologists, and researchers: the value chain of the language industry is shifting from the service of translating words to the stewardship of training intelligence. What once was called “project metadata” is now raw material for reasoning systems. The translator’s edits, the reviewer’s comments, the timestamps in a QA log, these are the new gold dust of multilingual AI.
By the end of his keynote, Guzmán had recast a simple truth in urgent terms. The future doesn’t belong to whoever translates the fastest, it belongs to whoever learns the smartest.
The Human–Data Symbiosis

As repetitive production tasks are delegated to machines, human contribution is moving upstream, to the design, curation, and governance of the frameworks that make intelligent language processing possible. The group discussed how human judgment continues to determine what is meaningful, what requires preservation, and how cultural nuances are represented in multilingual systems.
The discussion also considered data itself as an asset shaped by human context. Every annotation, correction, and review contributes not only to improved model performance but to a growing body of organizational knowledge. The participants reflected on how this interplay of human insight and structured data forms the backbone of global communication standards, extending earlier efforts such as Unicode’s work on universal character representation into today’s efforts to structure meaning for AI systems.
A recurring theme was the redefinition of talent in this environment. Rather than seeing automation as the endpoint of linguistic work, the panel emphasized its potential to extend human reasoning and scale the values embedded in it.

What was once viewed as post-editing or quality control is evolving into a new discipline, the art of teaching machines to understand language the way people do.
The End of Monolithic Localization: Wayne Bourland’s Agentic Blueprint
When Wayne Bourland (Dell) took the stage for his talk, “Globalization Redesign in the Age of AI,” he did what few speakers can: he translated disruption into clarity. His presentation began with a question both simple and provocative, if you could have an AI sidekick for your job tomorrow, what would you ask it to do first? The answers, gathered live from the audience, ranged from the practical (“take meeting notes”) to the personal (“handle laundry”) to the deeply professional (“connect source and target content and surface style and terminology inconsistencies”). Beneath the humor, Bourland was making a sharp point: AI’s potential is not abstract, it’s already everywhere
He described the current moment as a “transform or die” inflection point for the language industry. The disruption, he argued, isn’t just that AI can perform translations; it’s that the technology is now accessible to anyone. What was once the guarded domain of language service providers is becoming democratized through open models, APIs, and agent frameworks. This accessibility, Bourland warned, will render the monolithic Translation Management System, and the centralized translation team that supports it, too slow and too expensive to survive.
In their place, he envisioned the rise of agentic translation ecosystems, disaggregated, dynamic frameworks built around orchestration rather than control. In these systems, translation doesn’t move in round trips between stakeholders; it flows continuously through intelligent agents that coordinate terminology, style, and contextual understanding in real time.
Bourland outlined a conceptual architecture he called the Agentic Translation Framework. At its core lies orchestration, the ability to combine internal content, product documentation, and linguistic assets into a responsive workflow. Around it sit layers for personalization (through glossaries and style guides), task agents for specialized linguistic functions, and a data lake for metrics and feedback. In this model, human linguists become orchestrators of intelligence, guiding and refining rather than executing repetitive tasks.
The vision was bold, but Bourland balanced it with realism. File handling, integration complexity, and human-in-the-loop requirements are not going away overnight. “Tools and teams will need to transform,” he cautioned. But his central message was unmistakable: in the era of agentic translation, organizations will face a choice between business decisions and budget decisions. The companies that frame language as a strategic capability will thrive. Those that continue to see it as a cost center will be left behind.
Bourland’s closing thought lingered in the room: “Question everything you know about translation, the value we bring, the way we measure quality, the assets we protect. Then act.” The call wasn’t to abandon the past, but to re-engineer it around intelligence. In his view, the next generation of localization leaders won’t manage workflows, they’ll design ecosystems.
New Work: Uber’s Multilingual Annotation Economy
If Wayne Bourland’s presentation explored transformation at the enterprise level, the next talk revealed how AI is transforming work itself. It was delivered by Sophie Halbeisen, one of the industry’s most familiar faces. Known for her years as Global Head of Sales & Marketing at Plunet and her deep understanding of localization workflows, Halbeisen recently joined Uber’s AI Solutions division after a short sabbatical, and she brought to TAUS a fresh and fascinating perspective on what she calls the Multilingual Annotation Economy.
Her presentation centered on a new kind of opportunity emerging for linguists and gig workers alike: digital microtasks that train the AI systems behind global products. In Uber’s ecosystem, these include activities such as AI labeling, prompt–response creation, voice data collection, testing, and linguistic digitization, short, flexible tasks that teach machines to understand and communicate across languages.
Halbeisen framed this development as both an innovation in accessibility and a redefinition of linguistic labor. She shared stories of participants whose lives have been tangibly improved by this new hybrid model of work. One worker described the ability to contribute linguistic expertise from home while caring for an ailing parent; another spoke of earning additional income between rides by reviewing short audio recordings or digitizing receipts. What might look like automation replacing jobs, she said, is in many cases automation creating new ones, expanding where and how language professionals can contribute.
The applications, she explained, go far beyond translation. Multilingual annotation now fuels everything from voice assistants and drive-thru systems to biometric security, healthcare interfaces, and meeting-intelligence tools. Each dataset collected through these microtasks strengthens the foundation for inclusive, culturally adaptable AI systems.
Halbeisen positioned Uber’s initiative as part of a larger trend, the rise of a “linguistic gig economy” that blends human insight with scalable machine learning. For the localization community, it offers both opportunities and responsibilities. The opportunity lies in extending linguistic expertise into the heart of AI development. The responsibility lies in ensuring fair standards, ethical data practices, and recognition for the invisible work that powers intelligent systems.
By the end of her talk, Halbeisen had reframed what it means to be a linguist in the age of AI. The translator of the past transformed text; the linguist of the future trains intelligence. Her message resonated deeply with TAUS attendees, a reminder that the industry’s next frontier may not be in translation at all, but in teaching machines to listen.
Human Parity and the Economics of Singularity: Marco Trombetti
Few speakers embody the intersection of language, entrepreneurship, and visionary optimism as vividly as Marco Trombetti, CEO and Co-Founder of Translated. His talk, “How Far Are We Away from Human Parity,” was as much a thought experiment as a presentation, a sober yet inspiring meditation on what it truly means for machines to equal, or even surpass, human translators.
Trombetti began by introducing his definition of singularity in translation: the moment when it takes less time for a human to validate a machine’s output than it would to translate and review that same text from scratch. It’s an elegantly simple threshold, one that shifts the question from Can machines translate like us? to When does machine translation make more economic sense than human translation, without sacrificing quality?
He illustrated how this principle underpins Translated’s research into adaptive MT and evaluation frameworks such as ICE (Intelligent Contextual Evaluation) and SPICE (Semantic Proximity and Contextual Equivalence). Both tools, he explained, are freely available to the industry, a gesture that reflects his long-standing belief that progress in AI-driven translation should be open, measurable, and shared.
What stood out most in Trombetti’s talk, however, was his insistence on context. He argued that achieving parity isn’t about creating perfect algorithms; it’s about surrounding them with human responsibility. When translators work in context, seeing their output in the full document or interface, they no longer feel detached from the result. “Translators feel accountable for the final work,” he said, “and that changes everything.”
He linked this accountability to a broader economic reality. As AI performance improves, cost structures inevitably shift. Trombetti proposed an elegant formula: the faster we reach singularity, the more work flows toward MT, and the lower the unit cost becomes. Yet, paradoxically, he believes this will not diminish the role of humans. Instead, it will elevate them, to curators of meaning, evaluators of nuance, and designers of linguistic experience.
The future, in Trombetti’s view, is not a zero-sum contest between humans and machines. It is a continuum where each complements the other, guided by mutual feedback loops. He sees a time when translators no longer compete with technology but collaborate with it, validating, improving, and directing the flow of multilingual intelligence.
Trombetti’s tone was characteristically hopeful. He envisions a world in which translation becomes so seamless and affordable that it expands communication rather than compressing it, a world where language ceases to be a barrier and becomes an interface. The industry, he implied, is not approaching an endpoint but a new equilibrium: a form of co-evolution between human and machine that will ultimately make understanding more universal.
AI as Infrastructure: Venkat Rangapuram’s Systems Thinking
When Venkat Rangapuram (Centific) took the stage for his talk “AI as Infrastructure,” the tone of the room changed to conviction. Rangapuram didn’t frame AI as a disruptive tool or a passing trend, he framed it as the next great utility in human progress, as fundamental as railways, electricity, and the internet.
He began with a deceptively simple question: Why are large enterprises so bad at implementing technology that startups deploy effortlessly? After decades of consulting and leading digital transformation projects, Rangapuram has seen the same failure pattern repeat itself, ambitious AI initiatives stalling not because of poor models, but because of weak data infrastructure and organizational inertia.
Rangapuram described the future as an agent economy, where AI agents coordinate processes, decisions, and content across departments in real time. For such systems to function, data cannot live in silos, it must be dynamic, interconnected, and fluid, accessible to every agent that needs it. “AI agents don’t just need clean data,” he emphasized. “They need ecosystems.”
In Rangapuram’s vision, the language industry occupies a unique position in this transformation. Localization teams have been quietly managing complex, multilingual data ecosystems for years, terminology, translation memories, metadata, style guides, and glossaries. These assets, once seen as linguistic support materials, are now structural components of AI readiness.
His message was clear and urgent: companies that invest in data infrastructure today are not preparing for the future, they are building it. “Every month you delay this foundation,” he said, “is a month your competitors spend implementing agent-driven automation.”
Rangapuram’s talk distilled the essence of what TAUS 2025 was about. AI is no longer a feature, it’s infrastructure. And in that new reality, language professionals, with their deep understanding of structured meaning, could become the architects of the most human infrastructure ever built.
Building the Future: Marcus Casal and the Agentic Value Stack
As the second day progressed, Marcus Casal (Lionbridge) stepped forward with a talk that distilled the grand themes of the conference into a deceptively practical framework. His presentation, “Build, Buy, or Partner,” was a roadmap for how every language company will need to navigate the coming wave of agentic automation.
Casal began with a candid observation: the question isn’t whether AI will transform the localization ecosystem, but who will control the transformation. To stay relevant, organizations must decide where to invest their energy, building their own capabilities, buying existing infrastructure, or partnering where synergy outweighs ownership. Each path, he said, represents a different expression of the same principle: know your strengths, and design your stack around them.
He defined buying as the intelligent acquisition of what can be governed effectively, not just language technology, but the connective tissue that holds it together. That includes infrastructure in the broadest sense: model context protocols, middleware, APIs, and workflow engines capable of integrating with any source system. It also includes community management tools, because in the era of AI-assisted collaboration, the human network is as critical as the software.
Partnership, Casal argued, is the force multiplier that turns static technology into dynamic capability. “Partner with your customers,” he urged. Co-create, don’t just deliver. He also encouraged collaboration with frontier model providers and SaaS innovators, not to chase novelty, but to remain interoperable in a world moving toward multi-agent orchestration.
The heart of his talk, however, lay in what he described as the build mandate: the unique value a company creates when it ties all these elements together into a cohesive platform. For Lionbridge, that means building agents for content, data, and interaction, intelligent systems that orchestrate creation, translation, and quality evaluation while humans steer and validate the process.
Casal’s framework was refreshingly clear: build what defines you, partner where it accelerates you, and buy what stabilizes you. But beneath the strategic simplicity was a deeper truth, that survival in the next decade will depend less on which tools we own, and more on how seamlessly we integrate them.
He concluded by describing a future where success is measured not by productivity, but by connectivity, how effectively humans and AI systems communicate across every layer of the localization stack. In that vision, building the future isn’t about controlling more; it’s about orchestrating better.
From Translation Memory to Multilingual Intelligence: Mathijs Sonnemans’s Winning Lightning Talk
The closing spark of Day 2 didn’t come from a panel or keynote, but from a lightning talk that instantly caught the audience’s imagination. Mathijs Sonnemans (Blackbird) delivered a concise yet provocative presentation that went on to win the day’s competition, a vision for the evolution of translation memory into what he called multilingual intelligence.
Sonnemans began by tracing the industry’s long reliance on translation memory, those repositories of paired source and target segments that have served as the bedrock of localization workflows for decades. They were revolutionary in their time, he noted, but in an age of generative and retrieval-based AI, “memory” has become both the metaphor and the limitation.
His argument was simple and powerful: translation memory, as we know it, doesn’t actually remember, it merely recalls. It retrieves surface-level matches without understanding context, intent, or tone. The systems we need now must go beyond repetition to reasoning.
He described a future in which every linguistic asset, translation memories, glossaries, style guides, metadata, feeds into a unified vector-based knowledge layer. In this model, a machine doesn’t just search for identical strings; it retrieves semantically related information, infers meaning, and generates new text supported by evidence. The result is not machine translation as we know it, nor static memory, it’s a continuously learning, multilingual reasoning engine.
For Sonnemans, this shift represents far more than a technical upgrade. It’s the next stage in how the industry values its collective experience. Every post-edit, every in-context correction, every stylistic decision made by a linguist becomes a data point in a living intelligence, a system that doesn’t replace translators but amplifies their judgment at scale.
His presentation was as much a call to action as a demonstration. The language industry, he said, already possesses the raw materials for this transformation. The only question is whether we are ready to treat our accumulated linguistic output not as history, but as training data for the future.
When the applause faded, it was clear why Sonnemans’s talk won the lightning round. 2wReading this brought me back to TAUS Dublin earlier this year. What you captured here, Stefan, feels like a different altitude altogether. Dublin was about acceleration. This sounds like acknowledgment that the vehicle itself needs a redesign. Less add AI to localization, more re-architect how multilingual communication works. What resonated for me: the move from integration to orchestration. I just returned from a visit with a large client, and many of these topics (and techniques) were relevant during my conversations with the stakeholders. Data is replacing translation.
