There are two types of XAI methods:

1. Model-Agnostic Methods

Used for any AI model, even complex deep learning ones.

  • LIME (Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations): Creates a simplified model to explain individual predictions.
  • SHAP (SHapley Additive Explanations): Uses game theory to assign importance scores to each input feature.
  • Counterfactual Explanations: Shows how small changes in input could change the output.

2. Intrinsic Interpretability

Legal & Ethical Implications: XAI and Regulation

The EU GDPR mandates a “right to explanation” for decisions made by automated systems. Likewise, the proposed EU AI Act and U.S. AI governance frameworks demand explainable and auditable systems.
