Don’t overlook this about your work

Don’t overlook this about your work

The other day, my son asked me who I worked for. When I told him, “I work for myself - I run my own business,” his eyes widened, and he looked at me like I’d just revealed an alter ego or admitted I own a secret island. “You do?!” he said, awestruck. In that moment, I felt like the coolest, most impressive person in the world - to him, at least. (If you have a tween in your life, you know that's no easy feat).

That little exchange stuck with me. It reminded me how easy it is to get so wrapped up in the day-to-day grind that we lose sight of what truly matters. Between the endless to-do lists, unexpected challenges, and even the occasional misstep, we often forget to pause and recognize just how much we’ve accomplished - and how meaningful our work really is.

So, I want to remind you of something important: the work you’re doing matters. It’s impactful, inspiring, and changing lives. Even on days when it might not feel like it, your efforts are creating a ripple effect of good in the world. That’s something worth celebrating, sharing, and being proud of.

Remember to Audit Your Wins

This week, take a moment to reflect on the wins your organization has achieved recently. They don’t have to be huge - small victories are just as meaningful. Whether it’s a successful event, a new partnership, a milestone reached, or a story of someone whose life you’ve touched, revisit those moments that remind you why you do what you do.

Why does this matter? Because those wins are more than just feel-good moments - they’re powerful stories waiting to be told. And stories are one of the most effective tools you have to build trust, connect with your audience, and amplify your mission.

Here are a few ways to turn your wins into opportunities:

- Could one of your wins become the centerpiece of a media pitch?

- Would it make a great social media post or a feature in your newsletter?

- Better yet, could you repurpose it across multiple platforms to reach even more people?

Yes, there will always be more work to do - more people to help, more funds to raise, more connections to make. But don’t let the hustle overshadow how impactful your work is. Take the time to celebrate what you’ve accomplished. Share your successes with the world so others can see the amazing work you’re doing and become inspired to get involved.

Because when you share your stories, you don’t just amplify your voice - you amplify your impact.

And who knows? You might even impress your kids along the way - enough that they’ll look at you like you hung the moon. And honestly, is there any greater feeling?

I had a very similar convo with my 6-year old this week, though his level of "awestruck" was more confusion about how that relates to me saying, 'money doesn't grow on trees' when he asked about getting a new lego set. Think I need to work on my messaging 🫣 😂
