The Clover: Haunted Edition

The Clover: Haunted Edition

In this spooky edition of The Clover, we asked Ashling consultants to share their real-world automation horror stories. We've shared one in particular that still keeps us up at night. We hope you never cross paths with this ghoul, but if you do, we've shared insights and events to help you navigate the eerie path of uncertainty.

Dive in, if you dare.

The Phantom Process

It was a dark and stormy night. The office lights shone brighter as the late October sun slid behind the buildings. Screens hummed. The HVAC whispered. Somewhere, a printer spat out paper for no apparent reason at all. Huddled in front of their monitors were Kevin and Hannah, the last two remaining in the office. Eager to impress, they stayed late to take an urgent client call:

“Our automation stopped working. Can you fix it?” they asked.

Hannah replied: “We'd be happy to take a look and try to diagnose it. Can you please grant us access to your dev environment?”

Minutes later, access was granted. The two logged in and began their review. They traced histories, folders, tabs. But no logs. No runs. No artifacts. Hannah turned her camera and microphone off. She peered at Kevin with unease.

“Do you remember the last time the workflow ran successfully?” Kevin asked the client.

“Ever since we ended our relationship with our previous service partner,” they replied.

Then the chill set in. There was no code. The automation had never existed. Not archived. Not hiding in a dusty branch. It was never built. The previous provider had quietly offloaded the work to an offshore BPO that managed the process manually. When the provider stopped paying, the process "vanished".
