Aptiv Internship Program Develops Leaders

Aptiv Internship Program Develops Leaders

Partnerships with universities allow thousands of students to gain additional experience and grow their careers. Creating safer, greener and more connected solutions that enable the future of mobility is a commitment that requires hiring the best-trained professionals, as well as contributing to the education of future generations.

In partnership with many universities, Aptiv implements a robust program of internships and residencies around the world, which allows thousands of students to add experience to what they have learned in school, and open doors to develop their professional careers within the company.

This approach has helped Aptiv identify talented individuals in various regions, particularly in Mexico. An example is Dinorah Gutiérrez, who began her career at the company in 1995 as an industrial engineering administrator intern from the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas. Today she is the plant manager of the site in Reynosa.

"Due to the technologies we use in the plants, we have many connections with universities, especially for careers such as mechatronics and programming,"

says Gutiérrez, who during her 25 years in the company has moved from intern to engineering, planning, operations manager and then to plant manager.

"It’s a ‘win-win’ opportunity because the students put their ideas and new knowledge into practice and also have the chance to work alongside people who already have experience and know the process. It’s an excellent formula that has given us a lot of satisfaction," adds the engineer, who believes the development of technology such as active safety, which involves creating new devices that include cameras and radars to avoid accidents on the road, is a great opportunity for new talent.

Naiki Reynoso did her internship at the Aptiv Mexico Technical Center in 2012 while studying mechatronics engineering at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education.. After graduating, she joined Aptiv and transferred to the laboratories in Auburn Hills, Michigan, United States.

Naiki holds seven patents for inventions that are part of products for electric and autonomous vehicles. She is currently working on the application of functional safety, a standard program for hardware and software design to increase the safety offered by vehicles.

"One piece of advice I want to give to all students is to learn to identify opportunities. Don't let those kinds of doors pass you by because they may not come around again,"

says the Chihuahua native.

As part of the Students' Day celebration, which occurs on May 23 in Mexico, Aptiv reaffirms its commitment to contribute to the development of talent in the places where we operate.

Aptiv's Mexico Technical Center has agreements with the Technological Institute of Ciudad Juárez and the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez. The center currently houses 53 professional trainees who are studying engineering – with courses such as mechatronics, computer systems, industrial, business management and digital systems – or studying for careers in business administration, accounting, graphic design, finance and journalism.

In addition, the plants in Ciudad Juárez have been participating since 2015 in the company/higher education institutions Linking Organization called CONREDES, which organizes visits to manufacturing centers. They also implement programs such as the Lean Manufacturing Championship, in which teams of university students compete to solve real problems in the plants.

Aptiv in Tamaulipas also has agreements with the Technological University of Matamoros, the Technological Institute of Matamoros, the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas, the Technological University of Reynosa, Tec Milenio and the Technological University of Tamaulipas, whose students are involved in projects ranging from health, safety and environment to computer systems and quality.

Aptiv’s 36 production plants in Mexico are committed to helping develop new generations of professionals both on the job and through partnerships  with educational institutions.

I totally agree, I have an intern working for me right now in Aptiv and he helps me immensely plus he is going to all training sessions and thus is learning a lot too. I wish I had similar opportunities back in college.
