On which hill will each legacy automaker choose to make their last stand? Volkswagen’s final ICE powertrain will launch in 2026; their latest version of the T-Roc will be the last to attempt to comply with Euro 7 Emissions regulations as detailed by Volkswagen boss Thomas Schäfer via Autocar.

This is significant for a couple of reasons:

1)     A shift in offering means a shift in the talent required to produce quality machinery.

2)     This conflicts with other OEMs (see Mercedes), who no longer intend to have an all EV line-up by 2030.

JLR will go farther still. The move to kill their entire ICE range by 2025 appears brazen, but will enable the production of high-ticket next-gen EVs on an entirely new platform soon after. No doubt the ghost of their 9-figure investment in the XJ Electric has factored into this decision (a minimum of $100,000,000 – yes, really - for a car that never made it off of the production line).

The two cases presented here pose a question of inventory. On the one hand, Volkswagen banks on a strategy in which their bestsellers will enable a smooth transition into an electric world. On the other, JLR will move to shepherd in this era early: “The majority of our products cease production in June, but they will be on sale for a much longer time…” – Joe E..

Both methods are in stark contrast to some of the legacy OEMs, biding their time in a sea of new start-ups and an oversaturated market.

The question remains, who will be proven correct... and which strategy will yield the best results?
