Work-life integration is now a growing universal employee requirement, outweighing salary for the first time since JLL Research began tracking and surveying global employee sentiment concerning overall workplace behaviors, performance and work-life balance. While salary and flexibility remain fundamental, employers that focus solely on these factors risk overlooking the emotional dimensions of work—staying energized, having a sense purpose and receiving recognition for their work efforts – all of these factors are critical to sustaining long-term performance and employee retention. Friday Focus: Australian Local Government Employee Experience This one continues to puzzle me - and it has for the past seven years. When we look at employee sentiment data across Australian local government, one pattern consistently stands out: contractors, casuals, and part-time employees are more likely to say they’re proud to work for their council than their full-time colleagues. We see the same trend in other measures like engagement and alignment. One of my theories is that full-time employees see the organisation’s imperfections more clearly - simply because they live it day in and day out. It’s another data point that makes me reflect on the fact that employee sentiment is dynamic, nuanced, multifaceted, ever changing and that our engagement strategies need to reflect this.
