A huge thank you to Common Pantry for the opportunity to present an important seminar on Elder Fraud Prevention for our Chicago seniors. Protecting our community is at the heart of what we do, and sharing resources like our SmartShield service is vital in helping seniors stay informed, confident, and safe. During the session, we discussed key red flags everyone should watch for, including: • Urgency or pressure to act immediately • Secrecy, especially when someone tells you not to speak to family or your bank • Requests for passwords, one-time passcodes, or access to your accounts • Unsolicited calls, texts, or emails asking for money or personal information We also reviewed how to report fraud quickly and safely: • Contact the Fraud Hotline available • Forward suspicious emails to the designated fraud reporting email • report concerns, review accounts, or close compromised ones Empowering our seniors with knowledge is one of the best defenses against fraud. When we talk about online fraud, our first thought is often the financial loss. But what if I told you the cost is much, much higher? I recently revisited Cassandra Cross’s powerful TEDx talk on online fraud, and her words perfectly capture the critical message we need to share: It's time to stop blaming the victim. Here's the harsh reality that gets overlooked: * The Myth: Victims are often stereotyped as "greedy, gullible, or uneducated." * The Truth: Fraud cuts across all demographics. Victims are successful people in every aspect of their lives who were expertly targeted and exploited. *The Hidden Cost: The impact is far greater than money. Victims experience physical deterioration, severe emotional/psychological problems (including depression and suicidal thoughts), relationship breakdowns, and social isolation. The immense shame and stigma associated with online fraud means victims suffer in silence, afraid to disclose what happened. As professionals and as a society, we must shift our focus to the offenders; those who deceive, manipulate, and exploit. Our first response to a victim must be empathy and acknowledgment, not judgment. The overwhelming desire of every victim is simply to be heard. Let's change the conversation and be the voice that ends the silence. Scammers don’t just target strangers. They target people who care. Often, our parents and grandparents. Fraud today doesn’t always look like a stranger on the internet. It can sound like a familiar voice, a trusted company, or even a “grandchild in trouble” asking for urgent help. As more financial information moves online, awareness is the best line of defense. A few small habits can make a big difference: • Verify unexpected calls or emails—especially those asking for personal details or money. • Avoid clicking on links that request payment or login credentials. • Set up fraud alerts and talk regularly with banks, advisors, and family members. Scammers rely on fear and secrecy. The more open the conversation, the safer everyone becomes. Sometimes, a 10-minute check-in can prevent a costly mistake and protect years of careful planning.
