At the Central de Cervejas e Bebidas plant near Lisbon, a 100 MWh Rondo Heat Battery—the largest ever used in the beverage sector—will capture renewable electricity and deliver solar-powered steam 24/7, displacing fossil-fueled boilers without changing HEINEKEN’s brewing process. The HEINEKEN Company has chosen EDP and Rondo Energy to decarbonise the Central de Cervejas e Bebidas brewery and malting plant in Lisbon, Portugal, through an innovative heat solution – with a battery that stores EDP’s renewable electricity as heat, delivering steam on demand under any conditions, with no combustion and zero emissions. This partnership will lead to the installation of one of the largest heat batteries in the beverage sector worldwide, marking Portugal’s first major Heat-Purchase Agreement that combines on-site renewables, a long-term contract (PPA) and energy storage. As I’m heading to RE-Source, it’s great to see this milestone project being announced- combining renewables and heat electrification to decarbonize one of Portugal’s most iconic breweries. The HEINEKEN Company’s Central de Cervejas facility in Lisbon will now be powered by an innovative heat battery solution from Rondo Energy, storing EDP’s renewable electricity and delivering on-demand steam with zero emissions, marking Portugal’s first major Heat-Purchase Agreement that combines on-site renewables, a long-term contract (PPA) and energy storage. Victoria’s Energy Innovation Fund is now open, supporting industrial electrification across the food and beverage processing sector ⚡ Up to $2 million per project is available to help producers transition from fossil fuels to efficient electric alternatives, improving energy performance and reducing exposure to volatile gas markets. With $10 million in total funding, the program aims to accelerate innovative technologies that lower emissions and strengthen Victoria’s food manufacturing capability. Evo Energy Technologies continues to work with food producers and processors across Australia to improve efficiency and reduce emissions through advanced energy and heat recovery systems that align with the goals of this initiative. Industrial decarbonization is one of the biggest customer innovation challenges within the energy transition and one of its greatest business opportunities.   More than 70% of the energy used by Industry comes from burning fossil fuels to generate heat for industrial processes. This results in 20% of the global greenhouse gas emissions.   Switching to clean electric heat is technically feasibly for many processes, but renewables are intermittent and lithium batteries are not economically viable at this scale.   How do we solve this?
