Is your network strategy still stuck in the broom closet? MPLS and site-to-site VPNs worked when the network edge was a single office. But now? Clients expect Zero Trust, seamless cloud access, and AI-ready infrastructure, without blowing up the budget. Graeme Scott unpacks how SD-WAN evolved into SASE, and what’s driving the shift: distributed teams, cloud dependency, and the constantly expanding edge. 🔹 Azure Networking – 3 | Site-to-Site (S2S) VPN Connecting your on-premises network securely to Microsoft Azure is one of the most important steps in any hybrid cloud journey. That’s where Site-to-Site (S2S) VPN comes in. ✅ What it is: A Site-to-Site VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your on-premises network and an Azure Virtual Network (VNet) over the internet using IPsec/IKE VPN protocols. It allows your on-prem resources to communicate securely with Azure resources as if they were on the same network. ✅ Why it’s needed: 1️⃣ To extend your datacenter or branch network into Azure securely. 2️⃣ To establish hybrid cloud setups without immediately investing in ExpressRoute. 3️⃣ To enable migration, backup, or DR (disaster recovery) connectivity. ✅ How it works (high level): 1️⃣ Create a Virtual Network Gateway in Azure (VPN type). 2️⃣ Configure a Local Network Gateway representing your on-prem network (with your public IP and address space). 3️⃣ Establish a VPN connection between them using shared keys (IPsec/IKE). 4️⃣ Azure automatically handles encryption, routing, and failover. Traffic between your on-premises router/firewall and Azure gateway stays encrypted and secure end-to-end. ✅ Types of VPN connections: ▪️Site-to-Site (S2S): On-prem network to ↔ Azure VNet. ▪️Point-to-Site (P2S): Individual device to ↔ Azure VNet. ▪️VNet-to-VNet: Between two Azure VNets (acts like S2S but inside Azure). ✅ Key benefits: ▪️Secure hybrid connectivity ▪️Cost-effective vs ExpressRoute ▪️Quick to set up and test ▪️Scalable — supports multiple tunnels ⚠️ When to be careful: ▪️Bandwidth limited (~1.25 Gbps max per tunnel, depends on SKU). ▪️Latency depends on public internet. ▪️Requires static public IP on on-prem device. ▪️Use ExpressRoute for mission-critical, high-throughput workloads. 💡 Pro tip: Combine S2S VPN + ExpressRoute for redundancy — Azure supports coexisting connections, giving you automatic failover if ExpressRoute goes down. #Azure #Networking #HybridCloud #AzureNetworkingSeries #CloudEngineer #LearningJourney

Network monitoring was designed for simpler times. - When your infrastructure lived in data centers you controlled. - When users worked in offices you managed. - When applications ran on servers you owned. Today: - Applications live in AWS, Azure, Google Cloud - Users work from home offices and coffee shops - Critical data travells ISP networks, Internet backbones, cloud providers Traditional monitoring stops at your network edge. Network path monitoring extends visibility across the entire journey, regardless of who owns the infrastructure. That's not optional anymore.
