WHAT ARE THE KEY CHALLENGES SURROUNDING MENTAL HEALTH DATA? In the final paper of the mental health edition of the SAHR, Ndlovu and colleagues argue that in the context of mental health, the expansion of routine indicators, policy frameworks, and longitudinal cohort resources presents a significant opportunity for enhanced analysis and system insight. However, significant gaps remain concerning community-level data capture, disaggregation by age, gender and geography, standardisation of indicators, and governance structures. These limitations hinder the full integration of mental health into national health surveillance systems. In the mental health space, it’s easy and comfortable to stay in endless conversations, debates, and ideation with others from within the field. While often stimulating, I’ve found that many breakthroughs happen when we cross-reference ideas with people from entirely different disciplines. To advance innovation in mental health, we need scientific, legal, regulatory, medical, and financial perspectives. One of the most interesting parts of the past two days in the US is that I haven’t spoken to a single mental health expert, yet I’ve identified several clear ways to deepen our impact.
