⚡️Data Center Facility series: UPS redundancy⚡️ Following up on the previous post and before we post about UPS topology mapped to each Tier, today we will learn about common UPS redundancy topologies (i.e. what the letters mean): N = capacity required to support the load. N+1 = capacity N plus one extra module (one module can fail or be taken offline). N+2, N+x = extra modules for more margin. 2N = two independent, full capacity systems (mirror systems). If one full set fails, the other carries the entire load. 2(N+1) (sometimes written 2N+1) = two fully independent systems each with N+1 redundancy (highest commercial redundancy). CAP Theorem in Practice Ever wondered why building distributed systems feels like a constant trade-off? Enter the CAP theorem, it's a key principle that says when your data lives across multiple servers, you can't have it all. You get only two out of three: Consistency (everyone sees the same data right away), Availability (the system stays up no matter what), and Partition Tolerance (it handles network glitches between servers). In the real world, networks fail all the time; think outages, hardware issues, or just routine maintenance. So, partition tolerance isn't a choice; it's a must-have. That leaves you picking between Consistency and Availability. Go for a CP system (Consistency + Partition Tolerance), and during a network split, parts of your setup might shut down to avoid data mismatches. Like if two databases can't talk, one stops writes to keep things in sync. Opt for AP (Availability + Partition Tolerance), and your system keeps running through the chaos, but data might differ temporarily across servers. They catch up once connections are back. What is Storage vMotion? Storage vMotion is a VMware vSphere feature that allows you to move a running virtual machine's disk files from one datastore to another without any downtime. This means your VM keeps running smoothly while its storage is being migrated behind the scenes, ensuring zero impact on users or applications. Why use Storage vMotion? To balance storage loads across datastores To perform maintenance or upgrades on storage without downtime To move VMs to faster or more reliable storage dynamically How Storage vMotion works (simple): VMware creates a copy of the VM's files on the destination datastore. It tracks changes made during the copying process to keep data synced. Once synchronized, it switches the VM’s disk access to the new datastore seamlessly. The VM continues running throughout with no service interruption. Step-by-Step Guide to Perform Storage vMotion Log in to your vSphere Client. Right-click on the virtual machine you want to migrate. Many people still get confused between RDM and VMDK in vCenter 👇 🔹 VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk) is a regular virtual disk stored as a file inside the datastore. It supports features like snapshots and vMotion, and it’s perfect for most daily workloads. 🔹 RDM (Raw Device Mapping) directly connects a physical LUN from the storage to a virtual machine, bypassing the virtual storage layer.
