🍎 New Data on #foodwaste generation in the EU! 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝟱𝟳.𝟴 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 in 2023—a 0.7% increase from 2022, according to Eurostat. Here’s the breakdown: 🏡 Households remain the largest contributor, accounting for 53% of all food waste (69 kg per person). 🧃 The manufacture of food products and beverages rose by 9% since 2021, now representing 19% (24 kg per person). 🧑🍳 Restaurants and food services saw a slight decrease, contributing 11% (14 kg per person). 🧑🌾 Primary production and retail account for 10% (12 kg) and 8% (10 kg), respectively. New Food Waste Targets: The EU’s revised Waste Framework Directive (#WFD) introduces ambitious food waste reduction targets 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝟭𝟬% 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝟯𝟬% 𝗰𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱, 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬. However, reducing waste is only the first step. Municipal Waste Europe advocates for better 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 in order to turn municipal #biowaste into resources that benefit citizens, farmers, and the environment. Surprising Discovery: Farm Waste Beats Wood 40-to-1 for Water Cleanup New research reveals that biochar made from agricultural waste (potato stems, pineapple leaves, corn straw) removes toxic copper from water up to 40 times better than wood-based biochar. The performance gap is dramatic: -- Agricultural biochar: 61.8 mg/g capacity -- Woody biochar: 1.5 mg/g capacity Why does farm waste win? The circular economy argument in favour of E20 is, at least for now, a weak one. Why?
