#busyweek part 5: The Energy Conference Network starting the #Orphan and #Idle #Wells Northern Appalachia Conference in #Pittsbugh today to exchange current challenges and status quo. Hundreds of thousands of orphan oil and gas wells across the Ohio River Valley region threaten communities and the environment with harmful air and water pollution and climate-warming emissions. During the two day conference, Wolfgang Suess will give a talk about using aerial magnetics to detect and assess the wells. Jamie Davis already gave a great talk about the effectiveness of surveying with the MAGDRONE R3 Ohios Grand Lake, St. Marys - as he said: the first offshore oil borehole field. If you want to know more about using drones and aerial solutions for magnetic investigation, get in touch with Wolfgang Suess or Markus Schikorra from the #sensysmag team!
I had two very interesting days that gave me new insights into how demanding this challenge really is. Dwayne Purvis, P.E. was an excellent conference moderator and shared striking figures on the number of oil and gas wells that remain unknown or unmonitored — and how many new ones will be added as fracking expands in Pennsylvania, home to the fourth-largest natural gas reservoir in the world. A good chat with Beau Fry made it clear that America’s appetite for energy seems endless. The rise of AI and huge server farms will only increase demand. And nobody appears ready to give up their big trucks or air conditioning (which had me freezing like hell these past few days…). Margaret Coleman, Ph.D. reported on using methane detectors and drones to find orphaned wells. Yet beyond technology, a simpler approach might be motivating landowners to report wells on their property. Many hesitate, fearing liability for leaking wells on their land or the cost of plugging them. I’d love to say it’s just a matter of enough drones, operators, and MAGDRONE devices — but it isn’t. This fight faces fundamental challenges that must be tackled by the state and local councils!

2wReally fascinating topic. I was immediately hooked when we talked about it at the SMN Subsea Monitoring Network e.V. get-together, Wolfgang Suess
