Capital A will spin off its airline business by consolidating all AirAsia AOCs in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia under AirAsia X, which will be rebranded as AirAsia Group by late December. Chief executive Tony Fernandes announced at a press conference today, October 30, that all necessary regulatory conditions for the restructuring plan have either been approved or waived. On the fleet side, Fernandes confirmed that the group has canceled its A330neo orders as it shifts focus to A321XLR aircraft. The remaining A330-300s will be retired within the next five to six years, he said. As for the impending 150-unit regional jet order, Fernandes declined to provide further details, saying negotiations are still ongoing.

A very interesting (but not a huge surprise) and strategic move by both parties but with several hurdles to negotiate before it becomes a reality. If does materialise as planned, it’s a significant development and compeitive threat to the aspirations of other LCCs in the region, especially the recently announced Air Arabia base at nearby Dammam. One key advantage that other players have is timing and first mover advantage. The Air Asia ramp up seems quite conservative based on what’s being reported and the competition (old and new) could be well be in a very dominant position before Air Asia really gets going. Another issue to manage will be the strategic alignment and interrelationship with Gulf Air and making sure they are complementary and not competing, though I’m sure they have thought through some of these issues in detail before the announcement.
Capital A Berhad has signed a Letter of Intent with Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications to explore setting up AirAsia’s Middle East hub in Manama, signalling a bold push to connect ASEAN with one of the world’s most dynamic aviation regions. Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A, described the partnership as “a game-changer,” explaining that with aviation restructuring nearing completion, “both Capital A and AirAsia are stepping into another bold and disruptive chapter of global growth, and Bahrain will be a powerful launchpad for us in the Middle East.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ePbxjUJM #aviation #business #news #Bahrain
