It’s striking how easily we forget that living with diabetes means carrying an invisible weight, one that is translated especially in emotional energy. That 67% feel mentally impacted doesn’t surprise me, as it illustrates how much strength it takes to do the "everyday management" work while staying emotionally afloat. As clinicians, advocates, or simply humans, we have to stop separating physical and mental health, because for people with diabetes, they were never separate to begin with.

As someone working in cardiometabolic research, it’s encouraging to see attention given to the emotional burden of living with diabetes. Holistic care—combining metabolic management, mental health support, and community empowerment—truly makes a difference. Michelle’s advocacy is inspiring. 225

I agree 100%. I live with a person with type 1 diabetes, and this disease has a huge impact on our mental health — not only for the person living with diabetes, but for the whole family.

Addressing the profound psychosocial burden in diabetes requires integrating mental health screening and support directly into standard clinical care pathways, moving beyond glycemic metrics alone. 🧠💊 #DiabetesCare #MentalHealth

Powerful post. As a student working at the intersection of healthcare and data, I’m realising how often the emotional side of diabetes is underestimated in both research and practice. Michelle’s story makes it clear why the next generation of health scientists needs to design solutions that recognise the human experience, not just the clinical markers. This is exactly the kind of challenge that motivates me.

While nearly four out of five individuals with diabetes report experiencing burnout from the emotional burden of daily management, emerging evidence suggests that integrating routine emotional wellbeing monitoring into standard care, rather than solely screening for clinical depression, could transform outcomes by normalizing emotional reactions and empowering patients to self-manage psychological challenges before they escalate into treatment interruptions.
