Stablecoins processed over $46 trillion in transaction volume last year—triple the volume of Visa's global payments network. With a market capitalization exceeding $300 billion, stablecoins like USDT and USDC have become critical infrastructure for decentralized finance and cross-border payments. Ethereum and Tron networks currently facilitate 64% of these transactions. As market focus shifts from speculative trading to actual settlement, stablecoins are quietly reshaping global financial systems.

Stablecoins recently crossed $275B in supply, while settling $800B in monthly volumes to rival VISA. That's an example of infrastructure proving product-market fit: faster settlements, lower costs, and 24x7 availability. Meanwhile, the GENIUS Act will likely ensure more regulatory clarity, integrating stablecoins into formal financial system. When that happens, banks can custody them, institutions can build on them. This way stablecoins are evolving from crypto-native rails to legitimate alternatives for cross-border payments, treasury management, tokenized commerce, and other enterprise-grade use cases. Reserve requirements and compliance hurdles might slow innovation down. But when it comes to moving institutional capital at scale, clarity and reliability are typically more important than agility and pure freedom. Now it's about bridging permissioned and bank-led stablecoins with public, on-chain, and decentralized infrastructure.

As I work on Stablecoin strategy and Zelle orchestration for financial institutions, the question of interoperability shows up in every design discussion. 🪙 Zelle connects banks, yet its dispute systems don’t talk across rails 💳 Visa’s stablecoin cards extend fraud and chargeback to on-chain. 🏦 Stripe’s Open Issuance lets merchants issue multiple stablecoins. 🛒 Walmart and Amazon are betting the other way with closed-loop coins. Each is adopting a different level of interoperability. But how do you decide your level of openness? From studying cases around the world, a few principles for designing interoperability stand out: 🔹 Start with purpose — know what kind of connection you are enabling. 🔹 Align economics before tech — shared incentives make systems scale. 🔹 Ensure semantic clarity — meaning/ context must travel with the money. 🔹 Don’t get in your own way — today’s moat can become a future barrier. 🔹 Watch the big waves— laws and crises often force the next bridge. Stablecoins processed $46 trillion in transactions over the past year, nearly three times Visa’s volume. They now facilitate more value than most of the world’s largest payment networks. As transaction volumes grow exponentially, verification standards are beginning to evolve. Billions move onchain every day, and the focus should shift from how much value is transferred to how well stablecoins perform: their offchain operations and backing. A select group of issuers already provides real time proofs, setting a strong precedent for what transparency and integrity in digital assets should represent. The next phase is clear: turning this practice into an industry-wide standard, where every stablecoin operates with continuous, verifiable proof of solvency. Scale builds momentum, but only proof builds trust.
