It is fascinating how robots are increasingly used in industrial automation for performing repetitive tasks, while collaborative robots, also known as cobots, assist human operators in shared workspaces. Smart algorithms have made these robots highly efficient, often surpassing human performance in precision, consistency, and speed. This not only ensures uniform product quality but also sparks new ideas for future innovation. However, integrating software and hardware remains a complex challenge, involving issues such as interoperability among diverse systems, ensuring compatibility, and addressing scalability concerns. An agile workflow can be achieved through the integration of ABB robotic manipulators, 3D machine vision cameras, and the Robot Operating System (ROS), a combination that can significantly enhance factory automation and production processes. This union between hardware and software was successfully demonstrated in two real-world applications: automating the welding of looped steel hooks used for supermarket shelving and reinforcing steel mesh in concrete stair fabrication. Further software upgrades will help optimise communication and improve interoperability between different hardware and software systems. Such developments are reshaping the future of automation, or perhaps, more accurately, it is already evolving as we speak. All credit to the author, Steve Yuwono et al. https://lnkd.in/dz-Khmj9

What if there was standard software powerful enough to make robots run multiple machines with multi-op processes? What if out-of-the-box it could do automated changeovers for multiple different parts/jobs on multiple machines? Until now, it took man years of ladder logic or structured text… Not anymore.
