That’s one of the messages I shared this week on ausbiz, talking about how Australian businesses can finally get clear about AI and stop feeling paralysed by the hype. When I look across the mid-market, I don’t see lazy people. I see brilliant, exhausted teams working harder than ever, drowning in admin, meetings, and complexity, and wondering why productivity hasn’t moved in a decade. For context, it’s grown by less than 1% a year for the past 10 years. That’s the slowest pace in 60 years. So when leaders ask me, “Maria, where do we start with AI?” My answer is always the same. 👉 Start with clarity. Because clarity turns fear into focus. AI isn’t about replacing humans. AI: Friend or Foe?  I decided to share a deeper dive into this question that's been on my mind. During my sabbatical — a decision that transformed my career perspective, but that's a topic for another post — I took a master's subject at UFRGS and immersed myself in 'The Future of Work with Artificial Intelligence.' After sifting through 281 articles, I emerged with more questions than answers 🤯, but also with some incredibly fascinating insights. 🎯A quick tip for anyone tackling large volumes of research: tools like Google's NotebookLM—link in the comments— were invaluable in helping me read and discuss these articles efficiently. My initial analysis of the articles revealed these key academic themes: 1️⃣ The Great Transformation:  Academia sees AI as a profound engine of change, sparking debates on job displacement vs. new opportunities, and the urgent need for new digital competencies. 2️⃣ Ethical & Social Challenges:  Beyond the tech, discussions highlight governance, potential inequalities, workplace surveillance, and the imperative for 'responsible innovation. 3️⃣The Human Factor:  Research also delves into the internal impact: how workers emotionally react to AI, resistance to implementation, its effect on the meaning of work, and the evolution of leadership models. 4️⃣ Human-Machine Symbiosis:  The focus isn't just on replacement, but on optimizing human-AI collaboration to augment our own capabilities. Two questions keep me up at night: - How can AI truly help us balance professional and personal life, beyond just productivity? - Where should organizations initially focus their AI efforts: L&D, Recruitment, or Operations? 🔍 The Future Isn’t Just Digital — It’s Human × Tech Hybrid In 2025, we’re no longer asking “Will we adopt AI?” — we’re asking “How well are we blending AI and human creativity?” 📌 For example: Indian firms are automating customer-service workflows with chatbots and generative AI — and that’s good. But what’s better is when humans play the roles of insight, empathy, judgment while AI handles scale and speed. Here are three shifts I’m seeing — and you should watch too: 1. Skill sets are getting smarter. Creativity, problem-solving, strategic thinking — these are rising in value. AI can crunch data, but the human spark still sets the direction. 2. Work isn’t tied to a desk anymore. Hybrid, borderless, asynchronous teams are becoming the norm. But with freedom comes the need for stronger culture, clarity and purpose. 3. Collaboration across sectors is the new disruption. It’s not just “tech companies disrupt retail” — it’s “tech + logistics + health + consumer brands” teaming up to create brand-new value ecosystems. 💡 My take: If you’re in marketing, product, operations or leadership — ask yourself: • How can I use AI to free up time for humans to do the “thinking / feeling” work? • Which human-skills of mine are becoming the competitive edge, not the tech? • Who outside my sector could I partner with to unlock something unexpected? In the end, the businesses that will win aren’t the ones that simply automate — they’re the ones that augment what humans do best, and build new bridges between industries. What about you?
