Black and Brown youth and men face systemic barriers that make mental health care harder to access. They are more likely to experience trauma and less likely to receive services, especially culturally competent care. Meridian’s decision shows how fragile access can be. Equity is not just about availability. It’s about the right care, delivered in a trusted, culturally responsive way. What can leaders and organizations do to ensure mental health care reaches those who need it most? #AccessMatters #BlackMensMentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthEquity

Breaking the Stigma Around Mental Health As a Family Nurse Practitioner, one of the most meaningful parts of my work has been addressing mental health in the community setting—especially within the African American community, where stigma and silence can still be powerful barriers to care. I’ve made it a priority to have honest, heartfelt conversations with my patients, normalizing discussions around anxiety, depression, and trauma, and helping them see that seeking counseling or treatment is a sign of strength, not weakness. It’s about meeting people where they are with empathy, cultural awareness, and education, while maintaining firm, compassionate boundaries that empower patients to take ownership of their health. This work is deeply personal to me because improving health equity means making sure every person, regardless of background, has access to quality mental health care and the dignity of being heard and understood. Small conversations can create big change. Every patient who feels safe enough to say, “I need help,” is a step toward breaking the cycle of stigma. #MentalHealthAwareness #HealthEquity #FamilyNursePractitioner #CommunityHealth #ReducingStigma #AfricanAmericanCommunity #WholePersonCare

HOW DO WE PUT CHILD AND ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH AT THE CENTRE? In the latest edition of the SAHR, Simelane and colleagues spotlight child and adolescent mental health, noting that half of all mental disorders begin before age 14. Specialised services, however, remain concentrated in urban areas. The authors advocate for decentralised, family-centred, school-based models supported by task-sharing and early intervention – arguing that that this is not only a public health necessity but also a long-term developmental investment.
