🚀 Week 9: Building a Toy Blockchain in Rust This week, I took a deep dive into blockchain fundamentals — exploring how blocks are linked, how transactions are verified, and how consensus mechanisms like Proof of Work and Proof of Stake keep decentralized systems secure. So, still on my Web3 Journey. Read on how Blockchains are used in different sectors: banking and finance, health, currency, supply chains, food processing, and so on. Nothing much except the transparency, security, ease of use, cost reduction and decentralisation. However, there are some downsides to Blockchain. The first is the high cost of technology needed to run it. I heard a single computer that can power a node costs about hundreds of thousands of dollars. Second downside is the low number of transactions that can be handled at a second. Third is data storage limitations, which I believe work would have been going on. The last but not the least, is its history of use in illegal activities, but people always have a way to carry out their illegals other than Blockchain. Here's what I learned today... Imagine a shared online notebook that thousands of people hold copies of: 1. Every time a new entry (block) is added, it’s locked and linked to the previous one. 2. Each block gets a unique digital fingerprint called a hash. 3. If anyone tries to change a past record, every other copy of the notebook rejects it. That’s why it’s called a block–chain — a chain of secured data blocks. Decentralization is one of the core ideas that makes blockchain powerful. But what does it really mean and why is it such a big deal? In a centralized system, one organization controls everything. Think of a bank, a social media platform, or a government database. They store the information, approve transactions, and can change or delete data whenever they choose. That means there is a single point of control and a single point of failure. In a decentralized system, things work differently. Instead of one computer or company owning the database, it’s shared across many computers called nodes. Each node keeps a copy of the same record, and every update must be verified by the entire network. So even if one node goes offline or gets hacked, the system keeps running because the data still exists everywhere else. Think of a centralized system as a single library if it burns down, all the books are gone. A decentralized system is like thousands of libraries holding the same books; lose one, and nothing is lost. That’s exactly how blockchain consensus protocols work — they ensure everyone in the network agrees on what’s true before recording it permanently. Here’s how it happens: 1️⃣ A new transaction (like a payment or record) is shared with everyone. 2️⃣ Nodes (computers) check if it’s valid. 3️⃣ Consensus protocols — like Proof of Work or Proof of Stake — help all nodes agree on which block gets added next. 4️⃣ Once consensus is reached, the block is added to the chain, and everyone’s copy updates. ✅ The result: Trust without middlemen. Every participant can see the same truth — transparent, secure, and tamper-proof.
