NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Post

Sentinel-6B is on its way to continue a 30+ year sea level record! 🚀 Teams have received full acquisition of signal from the satellite, indicating that we are communicating with the satellite and it is functioning nominally. Once in orbit, the satellite’s instruments will be calibrated and validated – meaning we check that the data is accurate and reliable. Sentinel-6B will measure sea level changes over ~90% of Earth’s ocean. Its data will support our daily lives from the shipping industry and national security to weather and storm forecasting. Copernicus Sentinel-6B/Jason-CS is an international collaboration with our partners: European Space Agency - ESA, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, EUMETSAT, and Centre National d'Études Spatiales. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gJTSz9D8

  • A Falcon 9 rocket stands vertically on its launch pad at Vandenberg Space Force Base under a bright blue sky with thin, streaked clouds. The white payload fairing at the top features the Sentinel-6B mission decal. The ocean is visible in the distance behind the support structures and launch hardware at the pad.
  • A Falcon 9 rocket climbs into the night sky, its bright exhaust plume cutting a vertical line through thick, swirling clouds. The golden light from the rocket’s engines illuminates the surrounding vapor, creating a dramatic glow against the otherwise dark background.
  • The Sentinel-6B satellite drifts away from the Falcon 9 second stage above Earth. The golden-colored spacecraft is seen just after deployment, with sunlight glinting off its surfaces. Below, Earth’s curved horizon shows blue oceans, scattered clouds, and bright white weather systems.

Young people: put a reminder on your calendar to check in on this mission every 5-10 years. It will be alive.
