Testing Stepped hull Design with Computational Fluid Dynamics Software CFD Is Essential in Stepped-Hull USV Design Designing a stepped-hull Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) demands precise control of hydrodynamic behavior that cannot be accurately predicted with traditional empirical methods. The stepped hull improves speed and fuel efficiency by reducing wetted surface and drag, but it also creates complex flow phenomena—air entrainment, ventilation, vortex formation, and unsteady pressure zones—that directly affect stability, controllability, and propulsion performance. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), using tools like Orca3D Marine CFD (SimericsMP), is therefore indispensable. It enables engineers to: Visualize and quantify multiphase flow around steps, including air–water interface, lift distribution, and pressure fields. Optimize step geometry and placement for maximum drag reduction without causing ventilation or loss of stability. Predict trim, resistance, and seakeeping behavior under realistic speeds, loads, and sea states. Assess propulsor interaction, especially with waterjet or stern-drive systems sensitive to disturbed or aerated flow. Reduce prototyping time and cost by validating design decisions virtually before physical testing. Russia's Rosstandart has approved the National Standardization Program for 2026 and Beyond (PNS-2026). Work will be carried out on nearly 4,000 standardization documents, of which approximately 2,100 standards are scheduled for approval. The authors introduce a framework enabling quadruped robots to traverse unstable and collapsing terrain by performing in-situ terrain probing and load-bearing assessment without requiring specialized external sensors. They leverage internal joint measurements and integrate a state-machine that orchestrates probing actions, plus a model-predictive control (MPC) planner that chooses footholds balancing stability and forward motion. Experiments conducted on custom collapsing platforms and rocky surfaces demonstrate that the system can detect weak ground, adjust footholds dynamically, and maintain stable locomotion despite terrain collapse.
