This is not just a medical oversight, it’s a systemic failure affecting millions of women. I finally got around to listening to this fascinating podcast by The Diary Of A CEO on the subject of hormones and fertility. Experts like Mary Claire Haver, Dr. Vonda Wright, Dr. Natalie Crawford, and Dr. Stacy T. Sims offer incredible insights that are completely overlooked even in our modern society. Some points that stood out to me are: 🔍 Research Funding: Less than 1% of federal funding goes to peri- and menopause research — despite impacting millions of midlife women. These are women in their peak career years (40s–50s), often managing brain fog, fatigue, and hot flashes — yet peri- and menopause remains an afterthought. Without proper research, we miss early interventions like HRT. What happens next is talented, experienced women quietly leaving the workforce — not by choice, but by circumstance. ⏰ Diagnostic Delays: Women with endometriosis wait 4–11 years from symptom onset to diagnosis. That’s a decade of pain, missed work, missed promotions and diminished quality of life. Earlier diagnosis can be transformative and research shows HRT is most effective when started early in perimenopause, not when symptoms are at their peak during menopause. We need better research funding, faster diagnosis, and workplaces that support women through these transitions. 'Am I getting dementia?'  Midlife women ask this question more than you'd imagine. The fear in their head. The worry that decades of wisdom is slipping away. Aimee Spector has written an editorial recently published in the Australasian Journal on Ageing (& supported by the British Menopause Society) which addresses this fear head-on. The Menopause Mandate survey found brain fog is the most reported symptom amongst women 76% of 19,189 UK women experienced it. That's no small number. And for many, these cognitive challenges last several years and can be highly damaging to careers and wellbeing. But here are some facts: Menopause-related cognitive changes are NOT dementia. New UK study of 952 women confirms what I see daily in practice: the healthcare system is systematically failing menopausal women. The Evidence: 74% of women sought menopause help but experienced: Dismissive or negative attitudes from healthcare professionals Poor treatment management Symptom misattribution (being told it's "just stress" or "depression") Poor healthcare professional knowledge Need for constant self-advocacy What This Validates: If you've felt dismissed, gaslit, or told your symptoms aren't "that bad" - this research proves it's not in your head. It's a systemic problem. The Six Themes of Poor Care: Consequences of poor care (women suffering unnecessarily) Dismissive attitudes from HCPs Poor treatment management Symptoms blamed on other causes Lack of professional knowledge Women having to fight for basic care The Missing Piece: Consistent mental health screening during menopause is largely absent, despite clear evidence of the mood-symptom connection. Your Action: Document your symptoms, research your options, and don't accept dismissal. If one practitioner won't listen, find another. The research shows this is a training problem, not a "you" problem. As a nurse who specialises in this area, I'm as frustrated with the system as you are. You deserve better, and there ARE practitioners who will take you seriously.

A study by Newson Health revealed 99% of women said their perimenopausal or menopausal symptoms had led to a negative impact on their careers, with more than a third calling the impact “significant”. 59% had taken time off work due to their symptoms. Meanwhile studies by the CIPR and Socially Mobile show that many senior women quietly disappear from the PR industry. While two-thirds of PR professionals in England and Wales below director level are women, only 46% of senior roles are held by women. These two issues are probably not a coincidence. The impact of menopause on mental health for some women cannot be underestimated: brain fog, sleep problems, anxiety, depression and even suicidal feelings. Great news for women’s health! 💥 The FDA has officially announced it will remove the black box warning for hormone therapy in menopause, a long-overdue step toward science catching up with reality. For too long, women have been guided by fear from the Women’s Health Initiative study more than 20 years ago, which was later shown to have serious limitations. That study changed the conversation, but also shut many women out of care they needed. This change matters. It means more women can have informed conversations with their doctors about safe, evidence-based options for hormone therapy. It means less stigma, more support, and better health outcomes. The menopause movement reminds me of the mental health movement.
