OK, yes ... tech skills do matter. In my last post, I wasn’t saying tech skills don’t matter at all, they do. However I was keen to point out that human capability is what turns technology into impact. That said, every client I speak with asks: “So which tech skills should we actually prioritise right now?” What I recommend is to get going on skill building that makes AI feel less daunting and more doable. The ones that help people use AI as a partner, not a threat. Some ideas: 💡 AI literacy - knowing what AI can actually do (and what it can’t). It’s about being confident enough to use it, question it, and spot when something doesn’t look right. 💡 Data fluency - feeling comfortable using data to make decisions. Not just reading reports, but asking: “What’s this data really telling us and what should we do about it?” 💡 Prompting and tool use - learning how to work with AI tools so they help you think faster. Asking the right questions, testing ideas, and using AI to explore options. These skills make AI more approachable, not more complicated. And they start making a difference when people combine them with human skills like curiosity, judgment, and the ability to make sense of context. Ask your team this week: Where could these 3 skills create the most impact right now in our business? That’s where capability building should start. Simple, practical, and real.
