What if you could walk inside a 1,500-year-old cave and study its murals up close without leaving the present? This VR experience of Dunhuang’s Mogao Caves by the Dunhuang Academy took me inside the Nirvana Cave (Cave 148), where a peaceful Buddha rests surrounded by centuries-old murals. The best part? The interaction. With one controller, I could point at any mural detail, and with the other, an iPad appeared showing that section up close. As I moved it closer, it zoomed in; as I pulled it back, it shrank, so simple, but so natural. It didn’t feel like using technology; it felt like discovering history with my own hands. A huge thank you to Professor Eric Hanson, who helped us access this incredible VR experience and has been instrumental in bringing projects like this to life. His work continues to show how technology can open doors to cultural heritage in the most inspiring ways. This is what I love about XR: when design disappears, and all that’s left is pure wonder.
