It’s been a week since we wrapped up our Progress Leadership residential in Sheffield and today we’re sharing a snapshot of what was an inspiring few days. Over three days, participants had the opportunity to step back from their day-to-day roles, connect with peers and strengthen their confidence as leaders. Through sessions focused on emotional labour of leadership, building trust through impactful feedback and anti-racist practice, they explored what effective and compassionate leadership looks like in children’s services. Progress Leadership is one of Frontline’s programmes for career development, supporting current and aspiring leaders to enhance their practice and drive meaningful change for children. When Fellow Nana Kwabena Owusu joined the Central Leadership Program, he thought it would be another typical leadership course: a few lectures, group work, and theory. What he didn’t expect was how much it would reshape him from within. From online reflections to camp challenges and late-night conversations, he discovered that leadership isn’t a spotlight moment, it’s a quiet process of learning, unlearning, and becoming. Now halfway through his journey, he’s realizing that true leadership is less about being impressive and more about being intentional. It’s about awareness, humility, and consistency, even when no one’s watching. Read his behind-the-scenes story of growth and discovery here: https://lnkd.in/eygezPjM

Excellence comes from systems that endure, not metrics that fade. Leadership creates pathways where educators and students can grow, contribute, and feel valued. By providing equitable access to development opportunities, leaders foster a culture of trust, empowerment, and sustained engagement. School leaders can sustain this through practical, evidence-based strategies that build motivation and long-term commitment. The greater person in leadership: The person greater in leadership begins with self-leadership. We must start by leading ourselves if we want to become great leaders. Leadership is about creating a way for people to develop. If you are a leader who does not know how to create a way for people to grow then you need help. Many leaders today seek the position while they are not prepared. Preparation is the most important part of success. Those who are successful in leadership are those who prepare today for tomorrow's leadership. It took me 7 years to understand what it means to be a great leader. The one who is greater in leadership is not one in the position, but one who knows how to create a way for people to develop for tomorrow's leadership.

Being Present During Challenging Times Leadership isn’t just about making big decisions — it’s about showing up when things are tough. As a principal, some of the most meaningful moments aren’t during celebrations or assemblies, but in the quiet hallway conversations, the check-ins after a long day, and the times when staff just need to know they’re seen and supported. Being present doesn’t always mean having the right answers — sometimes it’s simply listening, encouraging, or standing beside your team as they navigate challenges. Our staff give so much of themselves each day; the least we can do as leaders is to be there — fully, genuinely, and consistently. Here’s to showing up, staying grounded, and leading with empathy — especially when it matters most. 💙 #BeKindWorkHardBeGreat #Leadership #SchoolCulture #PrincipalLife #Education #EmpathyInAction

“I stopped thinking about my job as just running the school day-to-day. I started thinking about how to create conditions for learning that lasts.” That reflection from a Rhode Island principal captures what hundreds of leaders have experienced with RIDE’s long-term commitment to cultivating leadership statewide through NISL: an individual transformation, one that includes a shift from thinking solely as managers to becoming instructional leaders. Read their stories and think about your own leadership journey. https://bit.ly/43nLGb1 What supports would make that kind of shift possible in your context? Drop a note in the comments. When Learning Becomes Leadership True leadership starts when you model growth. When your team or students see you turning up for workshops, taking notes, and staying teachable — it gives them permission to do the same. CPD, in that sense, is a form of leadership development. It says, “I don’t just manage people — I grow with them.” The best leaders aren’t the ones who know it all, but those who keep showing up to learn. https://lnkd.in/gDK9jFzR

I believe leadership stops being something granted to a select few and becomes something grown when done right… and in community. That’s what happens when schools begin to see shared leadership not as a structure, but as a culture. I wrote more about this in “When Leadership Becomes Culture.” https://lnkd.in/gvvCNXkc #Leadership #Collaboration #LearningCommunities #SchoolCulture #SharedLeadership

Investing in leadership development for new managers will make your organization stronger. Most training for new managers is focused on technical skills, safety, and business acumen. While these are essential subjects, they don’t equip new people managers with the all the tools they need. All too often, freshly minted managers find they are at a loss for words when having to address a team mwmber who is chronically underperforming. Praising in public is the easy part, but having tough conversations in private is difficult. In times of crisis, new managers often struggle to determine where they should be, what their role is, and what they should be communicating. No matter how positive an organization’s culture is or how great the results are, managers rarely have an easy day. Training in leadership fundamentals provides the confidence and clarity new leaders need to make the right decisions and inspire followership. Leadership development is just as important for first time managers as it is for high potential executives. Our Foundations of Leadership Experience will challenge your managers to find their voice and define their leadership style in the context of the 3 C’s: Character, Courage, and Competence. Over the course of four two-hour sessions conducted virtually, they will encounter case studies and practical exercises that will impart the fundamentals that all leaders need to master. Reach out to learn more and register!
🚀 Enrollment is now open! Join us for Foundations of Leadership, a virtual training experience taking place February 2–5, 2026. Designed for first-time and junior leaders, participants will dive into relevant case studies and explore themes that include decision-making under pressure, ethical leadership, adaptability in the face of change, and more.
