The future of sovereign AI just got a $1 billion reality check. AMD and the U.S. Department of Energy just announced something that will reshape America's AI landscape forever. Two revolutionary supercomputers are coming to Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Lux AI supercomputer arrives in early 2026 - America's first dedicated AI Factory for science. The Discovery supercomputer follows in 2028 with next-generation AMD "Venice" EPYC CPUs and MI430X GPUs. But here's what most people are missing: This isn't just about computational power. It's about technological sovereignty in an AI-driven world. While other nations race to build AI capabilities, America is building something different. An open, secure, and sovereign AI infrastructure that puts scientific innovation first. The Lux system will be powered by AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs and EPYC CPUs. But the real breakthrough is what this represents for public-private partnerships. For too long, AI development has been dominated by closed ecosystems. This initiative changes that narrative completely. It creates an open American AI stack that researchers and innovators can build upon. The implications extend far beyond supercomputing. We're witnessing the birth of a new model for AI development. One that prioritizes transparency, collaboration, and national competitiveness. At Koosai, we've always believed in "disrupting sensibly." This AMD-DOE partnership embodies that philosophy perfectly. It's not about building the biggest system. It's about building the right system for America's future. The convergence of sovereign AI, scientific computing, and open innovation creates unprecedented opportunities. For researchers pushing the boundaries of climate science. For innovators developing next-generation materials. For entrepreneurs building AI-powered solutions that matter. This $1 billion investment isn't just funding hardware. It's funding America's AI independence. And that changes everything. What does sovereign AI infrastructure mean for your industry? How will open AI stacks reshape innovation in your field?

In the fireside chat with Tomasz Bednarz of NVIDIA at the CEDA #AISummit2025, Dr Bednarz introduced the concept of ‘AI Factories’: “AI Factories are like data centres, but with a different language. Raw material goes in one end, and a more valuable product comes out the other. That product is knowledge, intelligence.” This concept reframes how we think about the infrastructure behind artificial intelligence. Dr Bednarz explained, “Whenever data is being changed to intelligence, that’s what we call AI Factories. It’s a system of conformance - components like GPUs, edge devices such as Jetson boards, all interconnected to transform data into actionable insights.” He also highlighted Australia’s opportunity: “This country needs to be a leader in AI. We have the talent and ambition to build factories here.” Lee Hickin summarised the idea perfectly: “When I heard it presented, I wasn’t sure why we were calling it a factory. Then it clicked - the raw material is data, and the output is intelligence. Tokens bring utility, intelligence adds value, and value creates economic growth. That’s why it’s a factory.” Just as steam powered the Industrial Revolution, AI Factories are fuelling a new era of transformation. They’re not just infrastructure - they’re the backbone of scalable AI development and the foundation for future innovation. An interesting discussion and concept - which I’ll take forward and consider in the context of the legal ecosystem and how we deliver legal services to our clients in the future.
