Interventional radiologists who sideline evaluation & management (E&M) visits may be unintentionally hurting their long-term procedural volume and value. New research from the Neiman Health Policy Institute shows that IRs who protect time for pre- and post-procedure patient care deliver more complex, higher-wRVU procedures and avoid further commoditization of the specialty. The study—analyzing a national 5% Medicare sample—found a striking gap: IRs dedicating ≥90% of their time to interventional care generated double the wRVUs per procedure and 66x more E&M claims than those spending ≤10% on IR work. For every 1000 live births, 5.4 will die. For being the US, this is an alarming statistic. We can change these adverse outcomes by simply caring for high risk pregnancies earlier and more consistently.
