Food Pact Network: Global Collaboration to Reduce Food Waste

The first Global Food Pact Network Report, launched today by WRAP, shows the power of voluntary, cross-sector collaboration to tackle food waste, one of the world’s biggest environmental and social challenges. National and regional Food Pacts are achieving significant results across Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK and the USA. Some of the highlights are: 🥗 2.7 million tonnes of surplus food redistributed, equivalent to 7 billion meals saved ✈️ 220,000 tonnes of food waste prevented, saving the equivalent weight of 600 jumbo jets 🏭 680,000 tonnes of CO₂e avoided, equal to removing 240,000 cars from the road And we must go further, faster. Without government leadership, business commitment and philanthropic funding, progress towards halving global food waste by 2030 will stall. As demonstrated by these nine countries, the model works in different contexts. As we look ahead to #COP30, it’s time for governments, funders and food businesses to step up and scale the impact of Food Pacts worldwide. First global Food Pact Network Impact Report Reducing food loss and waste is the world’s biggest environmental and social opportunity that isn’t being talked about. Food loss and waste is embedded in how we grow, sell, and consume food, driven by economic incentives that favour excess production, regulations that hinder redistribution, infrastructure that neglects sustainability, and cultural norms equating abundance with prosperity. Addressing it requires coordinated, systemic change around the world. The first global Food Pact Network Impact Report showcases collective progress to date, as well as a spotlight on the Network’s 10 global members: Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and two initiatives in the United States of America. 🥗 The Global Food Waste Challenge Every year, a staggering amount of food goes to waste even as millions face hunger. 🚜 13% of food is lost along supply chains from harvesting to processing. 🏠 19% is wasted at the consumer level in homes, grocery stores, and restaurants. This is more than just wasted food, it’s wasted water, energy, and resources that could have nourished communities. It's out: the first global Impact Report from the Global Food Pact Network, which shows: · Huge reductions in food waste and GHG emissions by national and regional Food Pacts. · 2.7 million tonnes of surplus food redistributed - 7 billion meals saved. · 220,000 tonnes of food waste avoided - 600 jumbo jets worth of food saved. · Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK and the United States drive global action voluntarily. The Food Pact Network was convened by global environmental action NGO WRAP in 2024. It has united ten national and regional Food Pacts across nine countries that account for 14% of the global population and around 20% of global food waste. The Food Pacts have the support of 920 organisations, including 550 food businesses, and are in countries that generate 38% of global GDP. Today’s report outlines the impacts of each Food Pact based on its in-country successes and as a combined Network. Cumulatively, an estimated 680,000 tonnes of CO2e were prevented through food waste reduction actions (equivalent to 240,000 cars taken off the road for a year) and 220,000 tonnes of food saved from waste - equivalent weight of 600 fully loaded jumbo jets. https://lnkd.in/enVQEdtN

🍎 One-third of all food produced globally never makes it to our plates. In a world where over 670 million people go #hungry, this isn’t just waste — it’s a tragedy of lost potential. If #FoodLossAndWaste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, responsible for 8–10% of global emissions. Cutting food loss and waste is one of the fastest, most cost-effective #climate solutions we have. It feeds more people, reduces #emissions, saves money, and eases pressure on #nature — all at once. That’s why Reducing Food Loss and Waste is Action Area 8 of the #AllianceOfChampions’ #10PriorityActionAreas. Alliance of Champions for Food Systems Transformation (ACF) members are already showing what’s possible: 🇳🇴 Norway — uniting government, businesses and civil society under a national agreement to halve food waste by 2030, already achieving a 10% per capita reduction since 2015 through innovation, education and data tracking. 🇸🇱 Sierra Leone — investing in cold storage, processing and transport, including a $75 million rice agro-industrial cluster project co-financed by the African Development Bank and OPEC Fund to cut post-harvest losses and boost local value chains. 🇰🇭 Cambodia — making food loss and waste reduction a national priority in its new #NDC, signalling commitment to more efficient, sustainable and equitable food systems. 💡 Every tonne of food saved means fewer emissions, lower costs and more nutritious food reaching those who need it most. Around 14% of the world's food supply, worth $400 billion, is wasted every year between harvest and the retail market (FAO 2019). Meanwhile, food waste at the retail and consumer sectors is estimated to be 17%. (UNEP, 2021). This contributes to hunger, environmental degradation, and economic losses. As part of the annual African Youth Dialogue on One Health and Sustainable Livelihood 2025, we are hosting this ideathon titled “Innovative One Health Approach to Food Waste Reduction” to encourage young innovators to develop and scale sustainable solutions that reduce food waste and enhance food security. Developing an interest in the food system is a masterclass in maintaining hope, so when a bit of good news lands it's worth celebrating. The Global Food Pact Network, led by WRAP has slashed food waste and emissions across nine countries. Among the wins in their first global report: ➡️ 2.7 million tonnes of surplus food redistributed, redistributing 7 billion meals ➡️ 600 jumbo jets’ worth of food prevented from going to waste ➡️ Greenhouse gas cuts equivalent to 240,000 cars taken off the road for a year Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK and the United States are driving global action voluntarily. At a more local and personal level, this news came hot on the heels of pumpkin waste season. It was great to see food writers and publishers not only galvanise to save leftover pumpkins, but also rail against the ones grown for purely decorative purposes. Food should not be grown to be thrown. As WRAP notes: 1️⃣ Food waste is a global crisis effecting society, the environment, and economies. 2️⃣ Every year more than one billion tonnes of food is lost or wasted - the equivalent of 90 truckloads every minute; double the amount that could feed the 783 million people who go hungry globally. 3️⃣ Food waste produces 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions and costs the global economy over USD 1 trillion every year. 4️⃣ Food waste is embedded in how we grow, sell, and consume food and driven by economic incentives that favour excessive production, regulations that hinder redistribution, infrastructure that neglects sustainability, and cultural norms equating abundance with prosperity.
