The survey reveals a cautiously positive outlook for the European power generation sector. Overall, business conditions are improving. There is a profound Imbalance between (1) Data center demand and (2) Utility and IPPs ability to build dispachable power. National Renewable Energy Laboratory building on years of hard data science has once again captured the issue exactly. Even if generation was available, demand is growing faster than the grid can support. Significantly Increased congestion, falling reserve margins, increased prices, and ultimately reduced grid reliability happen next. What to do about it? That is our job. Everyone’s. Last month WSP in the U.S. released its survey results on Americans' perceptions of energy and the grid. You can read the full WSP report here: https://lnkd.in/eGgUEAdD. There are many takeaways from the survey, but one critical insight that I think the energy industry must heed is that the public wants to know more about how the grid works and what they can do. 77% of Americans want more information on how to improve their community's electric grid. 10 years ago, I wouldn’t have thought I’d see a survey result like this. Many people didn’t think about where their power came from, let alone want to know how to improve their local electric grid. Currently, our industry's conversation is overwhelmingly dominated by the immense power demands of data centers and AI. We're fixated on calculating the next gigawatt needed to power servers, while the public's desire for understanding local needs remains an untapped opportunity. Meeting the needs of data centers is important, but the general public also clearly wants insights and solutions. I think this is a moment of significant opportunity, but not enough industry experts — from researchers to grid operators — are taking advantage of it. Right now, that information gap is being filled by influencers, politicians, and tech executives who couldn’t tell you the first thing about the history of the grid, let alone be expected to properly educate the public about how the grid works or what they can do. This is an opportunity to inform Americans about how the grid works and maybe even inspire the next generation of power and energy engineers that we’ll need to operate our grid in the decades to come.
