AG1 Research: New Synbiotic Formulation Supports Gut and Immune Health

I’m happy to share that our new paper — co-first authored with Fernanda Silva-Alvim from the University of Glasgow, together with my Mike Blatt and my PhD supervisor Diana Santelia — is now published in The New Phytologist Foundation! 🎉 In this study, we combined modeling with experimental validation to uncover how low CO₂ conditions trigger malate accumulation in guard cells during the first hours of treatment — a process partly driven by starch degradation. 🌿 We further show that starch degradation plays a key role when plants experience a low CO₂ pretreatment in the dark, enabling faster stomatal opening once they are subsequently exposed to light.💡 Check out the full article on the New Phytologist website: https://lnkd.in/ev8iiJWm #PlantPhysiology #GuardCells #CO2 #StomatalRegulation #NewPhytologist #Research #PlantScience

When discussing the effects of the microbiome on the host organism, sometimes you hear that it happens via metabolic and immune interaction. How do cells handle high levels of cysteine—an amino acid essential for life but toxic in excess? A new Nature Research Briefing describes the discovery of a protein that senses cysteine fluctuations and regulates its breakdown. Using a novel proteomic method, researchers showed how this protein activates catabolism pathways that keep intracellular cysteine under control. Interestingly, the pathway also connects cysteine metabolism to cholesterol regulation, highlighting how amino acid balance influences broader aspects of cellular physiology. By linking cysteine control with lipid metabolism, the findings shed light on how cells coordinate multiple systems to maintain stability under stress. This discovery not only advances our understanding of amino acid regulation but could also inform new therapeutic strategies targeting metabolic and cardiovascular health. The Multiomics Blueprint of Extreme Longevity A fascinating study published in Cell Reports Medicine explores the complete multiomics profile; genome, transcriptome, proteome, metabolome, microbiome, and epigenome of the world’s oldest living person (117 years). What stands out most is the biological paradox it uncovers: despite clear molecular signs of aging such as telomere shortening and clonal hematopoiesis, this supercentenarian remained free of major age-associated diseases. The study reveals resilient genetic variants, efficient lipid metabolism, low inflammation, and a rejuvenated microbiome all contributing to an epigenetic age far younger than the chronological one. As a laboratory professional, I find this work inspiring, not only for its scientific depth but for what it signals about the power of integrative multiomics to illuminate pathways of healthy aging and disease resistance. It’s a reminder that longevity is more than a number; it’s a dynamic interplay between our genes, metabolism, immune system, and environment. A new Cell Reports study found that certain human gut bacteria, particularly Limosilactobacillus mucosae and Ligilactobacillus ruminis, can produce serotonin from 5-HTP, influencing intestinal movement and gut–brain signalling. This discovery deepens understanding of how the microbiome may affect conditions like IBS and opens new opportunities for microbiota-based therapies.
